Liebling and I went to Wimbledon!
I’m far from being a tennis buff– heck, I’ve never even watched a game. But Liebling is a huge tennis fan and when he was able to secure advance tickets to Wimbledon (his workplace was a corporate sponsor of the tournament), I couldn’t refuse the opportunity. Wimbledon is, after all, one of the biggest tennis championships on the earth, and tickets are typically difficult to get in advance. So, one Tuesday morning during the tournament, we hopped on the London tube and went all the way west to the Wimbledon greens where the games were being played. Admittedly, I silently dreaded going as watching sports isn’t generally my idea of a good time — I would much rather play myself than gawk at others. But I actually ended up surprising myself by being active and engaged the whole time I was there. I think it had to do with the massive crowds and palpable sense of excitement; the near electric charge in the air emitted by spectators and competitors hoping for a win. No, we didn’t get to see Andy Murray, Serena Williams, or Roger Federer work their magic on the court, but we did get to see some pretty big names play, like Argentinian Juan Martin Del Potro (he’s ranked 7th in the world!) and Laura Robson (she’s ranked no. 1 in the UK). Of course, knowing absolutely nothing about tennis, I didn’t realize these people were good/famous until Liebling told me. I didn’t bring my camera (shame on me!) but Liebling luckily did, so he took the vast majority of the awesome pictures you see below. It was a great day in great company and the display of sportsmanship and competition really impressed me!

So envious of you, Wimbledon has always been a summer staple for me!
I was going to head there with co workers, queue on the morning and hang out on the lawn but plans changed last minute. It is definitely on my list of things to experience while I live here. Although after Serena went out I wasn’t as bothered about attending.

With the exception of gymnastics and swimming, I’m not that into sports. Still, I would love to go to Wimbledon someday. There are certain sporting events that I’d totally travel for – Wimbledon, the Olympics, the World Cup, the KY Derby. You’re right – there’s something about being around a bunch of other sports fans that helps me get in the mood.
I’m a huge tennis fan and have been to the Australian Open (another Grand Slam) for the last 7 years. which is particularly impressive considering I’ve only LIVED in Australia for the last 6 years…hmmm…

I don’t know why, Robin, but somehow going to the US Open in NYC sounds way cooler!! Maybe it’s because I love NYC! 🙂
