Hong Kong: Birthday drinks at Ozone, the highest bar in the world

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I got to celebrate my birthday on top of the world. Literally.

Liebling is a man who is into aerial views. He loves surveying his surroundings from above: everywhere we go he has to find the highest point, summit, or tallest building to visit, perch atop and/or take photos from.

And hence, I wasn’t surprised when he told me we would be making a stop in Hong Kong’s Ozone bar as part of my birthday celebrations this past Friday. Even though I don’t share his appreciation for lofty perspectives, I was tickled by the prospect of visiting Ozone: at 118 stories above the ground, it has the unique distinction of being the highest bar in the world.

Ozone is located in the swanky Ritz-Carlton hotel on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong, which itself is easy to access via the city’s MTR subway system. Once inside the hotel, two elevators bring you up to the 118th floor.  They zip along so quickly and smoothly it’s easy to forget you’re ascending into the clouds.

The bar itself is new age-y with diaphanous decor, floor-to-ceiling windows, and impeccably groomed waitstaff eager to attend to customers.

Friday’s foreboding skies made for a hazy panorama upon our arrival, so Liebling and I focused our attention instead on our drink orders.   The prices on the menu are a bit ridiculous, but clearly you pay a premium for the view.

After a drink, the horizon darkened and Hong Kong’s famous skyline made its appearance.  Even on a hazy day like this one, the view was striking.

A drink at the highest bar in the world with my favourite person in the world — not a bad way to ring in year number 31 on planet earth!
