Reason #4379 you should follow me on Instagram: I post my travels there real time, and a lot of the pictures and stories I share there actually never make it to the blog (erm, sorry guys).

Such was the case with my Jamaica trip. I finally went back to my parent’s homeland a few months ago after an embarrassingly long time away and HAD THE BEST TIME. I was joined by Liebling, my mom, auntie, and uncle and we split our time between Montego Bay (where we spoiled ourselves with a stay at the RIU all-inclusive resort) and Kingston (where my mom and auntie grew up and where many of my family members still reside).

We came, we saw, we ate ourselves silly (Jamaican food is LIT, my friends).

The famjam in Jamrock. After travelling the world, I wanted to go home. Not to Canada, my “home” home, but to Jamaica, the country of my parents’ birth. It is the place whose culture, food, and values have shaped me most, even though I grew up in a land far far away. Time and circumstances kept me away from JA too long, so months ago I started talking to my mom and aunt about making a return trip. Together. I wanted them to show me their roots and in turn I wanted to show off this special island to my husband, so he could perhaps gain a bit more insight into this particular part of who I am and where my people are from. So this Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my mom, aunt, and uncle, who took the time out of their busy schedules to jump on a plane and join me on this adventure. I am thankful for all the family and friends who live on the island, for their hospitality, local knowledge, and rides around town have been clutch. I am thankful for having a husband who is up for anything, even though he only understands about 20% of what is being said when folks start speaking in Jamaican patois (lol). I am thankful for jerk seasoning, festivals (the ones you eat!), kola champagne, and ackee and saltfish on repeat. And most of all, I am thankful for having the health, time, and finances to execute such a trip in the first place. #thanksgiving #family #jamaicatodiwerl

I don’t stay in the resorts because I love being where the locals are. Negril and Kingston are my favorite spots and I’ll be back in Negril for Labor Day weekend. Cannot wait!!! Reggae music, Rastas, Rum Punch, Jamaican Patois, Beef Patties, Beautiful Beaches, Jerk Chicken, Dancehall Clubs, etc.!!! Totally addicted! 🙂

  • I have been missing Jamaica like crazy. I have been back twice, but I have not been there in 10 years!!!! I don’t know where the time went, but I really do want to pay my family a visit. It’s definitely home. I speak Patois all day, eat Jamaican food, have Jamaican friends, and even though I left when I was just 9 years old, it’s such a huge part of who I am. Oneika, you really made me miss the place. Hopefully, I can go there soon.
