Not to be confused with the identically-named Jaffa Cake (a very popular, very tasty biscuit eaten primarily in the UK), Jaffa (full stop) is a district that forms the oldest part of Tel Aviv. Though this ancient municipality isn’t geographically far from the centre of Israel’s most populous city, aesthetically Tel Aviv and Jaffa are miles apart. The glitz and glam of Tel Aviv give way to the dust and humility of Jaffa, once an important port. The chic shopping streets in TLV, rife with brand name clothing stores, contrast sharply with Jaffa’s bustling bric-a-brac markets, which boast everything from second-hand boots to vanity license plates.
Navigating Jaffa’s market was fun, especially due to a few new friends I made. As Liebling and I meandered through the stalls, this motley crew beckoned to us, desperate for us to join them for lunch. We stayed with them at least long enough to snap this photo (for the record, the two gentlemen pulled me on to their laps.
