Why Dubai is making me fat

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

The food in Dubai is contributing to the rapid expansion of my waistline. Would you like to see some examples of why?

We arrived in Dubai two days later than scheduled (due to a major bungle on my part that I will explain later!), and we have been making up for lost time, food-wise.  There have been many opportunities to indulge our tastebuds, and we have been doing so, without mercy.

Some photographic evidence of the things we’ve been eating:

Lentil soup with accompanying pita chips

The lovely hotel hosting us during our stay, the Pullman Dubai Mall of the Emirates, has been contributing greatly to the ridiculous amount of calories I have been consuming on a daily basis since my arrival in the UAE.  The food is good and there is a lot of it.  This is dangerous for me- Liebling is long and lithe and has never had to worry about gaining a pound in his life, lucky boy!

An assortment of kebabs: kofta, chicken, and lamb

Tabbouleh- similar to hummus, but made from eggplant

Our first night, we had the pleasure of dining at Bastakiah Nights, a restaurant found in Bur Dubai, the historic centre of town.  I’m usually not very adventurous when it comes to foreign cuisines, but this was a great choice!  We each had a starter, main, and drink for about $30 USD per person.

Berry marble cheescake

Yesterday, we headed to nearby emirate Abu Dhabi and checked out the Emirates Palace, the hotel which is reputed to be the second most expensive hotel ever built (stay tuned for a post on this place, it is insane). Needing a reason to linger for a bit longer, Liebling and I headed to one of hotel’s cafe and ordered the cheapest things on the menu- one of them being this delectable cheesecake, which was a whopping $16. Very expensive, but very tasty.  Will I pay that much for a piece of cake in the future? Probably not, but for the experience and ambience it was totally worth it and very filling to boot!

So I’m eating well and gaining weight… But instead of crying the blues, I’m taking advantage of the opportunity and my heart is content. Because what’s the point of going on vacay if you can’t enjoy, let your hair down, and loosen your belt a notch?

Which of these dishes catches your fancy? What type of food do you tend to eat when you travel?

Psst! Don’t forget to “like” me on Facebook if you haven’t already! Your support is much appreciated!
