A short note on travel and fear. Hola from Costa Rica! As I expected, my wifi connection is horrendous so my updates from here have been scanty — apologies. At any rate, I just wanted to share a quick reflection from today about how travel has allowed me to confront a few things I am afraid of.
Travel for me is about conquering fears and pushing your personal limits. Maybe I’m strange, but when I travel I like that degree of uncomfortableness, that feeling of anticipation mixed with terror that makes your throat dry and your hands clammy. For example, I’m afraid of heights. Ascents give me vertigo and when I was younger I used to have nightmares about falling from way up high. Despite this fear, I have a strange fascination with being in the sky: I threw myself out of a plane on my 30th birthday and long to one day see the world from a hot air balloon.
Given this, you can probably understand how I felt this morning when Liebling and I embarked on a zipline tour of Monteverde’s Cloud Forest. I was both excited and distressed. Visions of me tumbling hundreds of feet into the jaws of the jungle intermingled with a child-like giddiness at the thought of being in flight. In the end, curiosity got the better of me and I stretched myself enough mentally to complete 15 cables though light rain and heavy fog. I screamed the whole way through despite this being my 3rd time (I’ve done ziplines in India and Guatemala)!

Looks like an awesome experience! I’m going ziplining for the first time later this year and I’m a huge scaredy cat so that’ll be interesting… I think travel for me really pushes me to my limits because I start to adopt a “if not now, then when?” attitude. I’m definitely braver when I’m travelling than when I’m at home – that’s for sure!
So true! A lot of it for me boils down to the carpe diem mentally. Totally trying to live every day as though it’s my last and get the most out of life in general!
Through Traveling, I have overcome my fear of going on vacation alone. It’s actually my preferred way to travel now. Great job overcoming your fear of heights. Or at least fear of zip lining. I wish I had the chance to zip line when I was in Costa Rica. Looks like so much fun.

Oh hell to the NO!!! :-). I’m not afraid of heights, but l think those things can only support so much weight no? Too much stress in the line..lol. Good that you conquered your fear.
I think they will support up to 250 pounds? Not sure though, good question!
Travel helps you to grow and push your boundaries to places that you’d never thought were possible but ziplining? No thanks.
I’m not afraid of heights, spiders, the dark, or anything really. Just monkeys! Most places are perfectly safe but I have a knack of falling off things…!
I’m no fan of ascends either! Jumping out of a plan, THAT I seriously could never do (=really don’t want to do) however, I do want to try zip lining! I stood by a zip lining plateau a few weeks ago and was surprised to see it looks so much scarier in real life then in pictures! You did a good job making it look like a lot of fun!
Oh wow! Lovely that you are conquering your fear like this! I haven’t yet jumped out of a plane and I’m wondering if I will ever get to it, seeing that I can’t stand roller-coaster thingies and they are not so far off the ground!!

What part of Costa Rica did you travel to? Also did you learn of the best ways to travel to a border country from there such as panama? I’m going to CR soon and would like to go somewhere near for a day or 2.
