Half-assed, politically-incorrect, and surely uninformed observations thus far:
-Ireland is cold.
-Ireland is not as “white” as I thought it would be. Dublin seems to be quite ethnically diverse.
-Confirmed once again that food in the UK is pretty crappy and very pedestrian. My stomach hurts.
-Ireland is just as rainy and green as I pictured it to be.
-I really need to learn to cross the street here without getting honked at or nearly run over. The Irish (as well the other countries in the UK), drive on the left side of the road.
-Everything closes too freakin’ early!
-Best food options here are either Turkish kebabs, or Chinese food.
-Dublin is HELLA expensive. Yikes!
-I can’t help but smile when I hear the Irish talk. They all seem so friendly and cute, just like the Lucky Charms leprechaun (yall who live in Canada and the States know EXACTLY what I’m talking about- “they’re magically delicious!”)
-Things that make you go hmmm: I met a Black South African guy in my hostel who tells me that the Irish are very racist against people of colour. Not too sure if that’s the case, but I do know that last night when I tried to walk into a convenience store that had its doors WIDE OPEN, the women who works in the store ran up to me and asked me to leave because she claimed that the store was closed. Curiously enough, a few minutes later when I walked past the store again, the doors were still WIDE OPEN. As well, I attempted to board a city bus today, and as soon as I stepped on the platform, the bus driver told me the bus was no longer in service. But why, then, were there still other people on the bus??? And why did he let another white lady get on in front of me?!??! And another incident… I was accosted by some Irish men as I walked down the street- they heckled me and told me that I had a big, fat ass, and could I wiggle it even more as I walked, telling me as well to “show them what I was working with”. In a javascript:void(0)nightclub earlier on this evening, a White man touched my hair and asked if I could give him some. Isolated incidents?? Hmm… Not too sure…
Anyway, gotta go, but I will give more detailed updates later!!! Onward to Edinburgh tomorrow!!

I am SO sorry about the racist incidents. Thank goodness such happenings are rare and for the most part, you have met kind and helpful people on your travels.

LOL @ ur magically delicious interactions with the Irish. And sorry as well for the racist incidents, boo. But hopefully the rest of your whirlwind adventures in Europe have been much more embracing of other cultures, and this has been an isolated incident.
So sorry to read about your racist incidents! Thankfully I think racist jerks like those are in the minority.
What the Black South African guy you said may have some validity though. I think the Brits (and the Irish to some degree) make a distinction between being a black African and being a black American or Canadian. I've encountered a couple of racist incidents in the UK (from a couple of stupid and ignorant teenagers), but on the whole I haven't run into much racism. But talking to friends/friends of friends who are black African, I've heard more stories of racism. I don't want to generalise and perhaps that's just my experience.
Arrrggghhh and here I am thinking of visiting Cork or Dublin….. I will still take a chance eventually.
I’m from Cork, and I’m very sorry you had to deal with those racist idiots 🙁 But pleeeease be careful and do not say Ireland is part of the UK if you are in the Republic of Ireland, as that is not part of the United Kingdom and you may seriously offend someone :/ Northern Ireland is in the UK, the Republic (south) is not.
Visit Cork some time, it’s a lot quieter than Dublin with amazing coastal views 🙂
The incidents that you mentioned were enough for me to decide for myself that the Irish of today possess the same racist attitudes of the Irish that settled in the U.S. during the 1800s, particularly here in Texas. Many Dubliners that you encountered may have been nice to share a smile, but the multiple experiences that you described were racist encounters for me. I won’t sugar-coat or leave room for a different interpretation. What’s the point in that? Do you have to have a few more to confirm?
No apart from that I don’t have any more experiences to confirm. I hesitate to paint the whole country as racist though. But my time in Dublin definitely had me side-eyeing!
Since was born and brought up in Glasgow, Scotland and I’m black, I do get people asking if they could have some of my hair but they don’t mean it in an offensive way.The Scots just like a wee joke so I think that man you met was just saying it in a jokey, non-offensive way.
Ireland has long been a “dream” vacation for me, but after reading this I am reluctant. I tend to travel alone and would be a bit worried about being in the environment. I understand that not all behave this way, but it just makes me pause.
I used to live in Cork, Ireland and I can write without a shadow of a doubt, that it was THE MOST racist country I ever had the misfortune of living in. The fact that I’m a Black American should tell you just how bad it is there. I lived there for just over 4 years and it was a terrible place to live. The day I moved out of there was the best day of my life.
