India Sneak Peek

I’m in India!

The internet connection here is super slow so just a few words and pictures for now.

I arrived in India a few days ago after a long, exhausting night flight from London (where chatty seat mates made sleeping near impossible).  After a few days in Delhi, I’m now spending the weekend in Jodhpur, known as India’s blue city.

Some quick observations of India so far:

  • I’m not shocked by the poverty/pollution/overall craziness like people told me I would be.  The parts of Delhi and Jodhpur that I’ve seen range from affluent to very, very poor, but after having travelled in the poorest cities in Asia, Africa, and South America, I find that I am not experiencing any culture shock.
  • There are random cows everywhere. I saw a cow nearly get hit by a truck today as it meandered in the street.
  • There are so many different types of Indian cuisine that I had no idea about!  In London, I realized that I eat a lot of North Indian food.  I have been learning about the Southern Indian varieties.  More on that in a future blog post.
  • Indian people are more diverse in their appearance that I had imagined.  Huge ranges in skin colour, stature, and facial features.
  • Hand sanitizer is my best friend.  I have been using it copiously because I’ve very afraid of getting sick.

I’m in Jodhpur for one more day and then flying back to Delhi and taking the train to see the Taj Mahal in Agra for a few days.  Having a great time so far!

  • I lived in India for over a year and I miss it so much…India is such a diverse nation, sadly I never got to visit jodhpur…enjoy the incredible nation

    • My friend tells me that Jodhpur really resembles other cities in Rajasthan like Jaipur and Udaipur, so if you’ve been to those you probably have a decent idea of what it’d be like!

  • I have never been to India but I have heard negative things about the issues you are pointing out: poverty, kids begging on the street, chaos, heat and humidy (mostly from ex-coworkers, one even cut his trip short because he couldn’t stand the surroundings). However, I have also heard great things from people who have more travel experience. Like you, I have been to some “difficult” areas in Central and South America. Maybe those places have prepared me a little bit for India. I would definetly would like to go.

    • I would definitely recommend that you come. The culture is so rich and the country is so huge and diverse that one trip is not enough!

  • WOW! Love the pics and India is place I was always fascinated with because I had lots of Indian friends. The huge disparity between rich and poor especially in Asian countries is something to get adjusted to as I see this in Jakarta.

    • I’ve never been to Jakarta but spent some time in Bali and two years in Hong Kong as you know! I definitely feel that living in Asia opened my eyes to this huge disparity.

  • India fascinates me, although I do imagine that I would face some culture shock between the crowding and the poverty. Can’t wait to see and hear more – hope you’re still having a great trip!

    • Merci beaucoup d’avoir lu mes blogs! Franchement, tout le monde est très sympa avec moi et se comporte correctement, bien sûr que la curiosité entre en jeu mais c’est normal vu que la plupart des Indiens (surtout dans les villes pauvres) n’ont jamais rencontré une Noire! Les gens ici, surtout les jeunes me dévisagent dans la rue mais c’est jamais avec méchanceté!

  • Looks gorgeous already. I can’t wait to read more because I’m heading to India in a couple of weeks too! I’m doing a 15 day tour around northern India starting and ending in Delhi. Can’t wait to hear more about the food!

  • I’ve traveled to India twice,the first time I went to New Delhi and also Agra to see the Taj Mahal.The second time I went to Mumbai,Chennai,Coimbatore,and a few cities in the state of Kerala.

  • I want to go to India but I have heard that it is a very color conscious country. Their are lots of ads for “fair skin” creams. People in the lower caste tend to be darker and the upper caste and wealthy are fair. Sadly, Africans are seen as drug peddlers and scammers, especially Nigerians.     • I don’t mean to be flippant, but to be honest, which countries aren’t colour conscious? I’ve seen the same phenomenon in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, I’m afraid. I don’t discount it but I don’t let it stop me from seeing the world… The friend I am staying with in India is black and has lived here for two years, but has luckily not been the victim of racism.

  • I was surprised also by how not-shocked I was at the poverty in India. One of my friends had extreme culture shock as she had never traveled to a third-world country, and I was a little unphased having traveled to a number of poor countries myself. I was wondering if something was wrong with me because I was unaffected, but I am happy to know I am not the only one who felt this way.

  • Been there twice , and I love it there. Love the way it’s crowded, their culture. The land is so beautiful , been to New Delhi , Agra , Bangalore a d Hyderabad , when is your next trip there , maybe we can plan and visit together.

  • Great photos and notes so far! We have not yet been to India, but Darcy’s parents have been twice and absolutely loved it. It wasn’t very high on our list until we heard all the amazing stories and saw all the amazing photos from their trips!
