Ipod = Ipood

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

When I went to Thailand last October, I came across a t-shirt in the markets of Bangkok that had an image of a guy with headphones sitting on a toilet and the word “Ipood” emblazoned across the front. I got the joke, thought it was cute, then completely forgot about it. (I actually found an image of this t-shirt on the internet, but decided to post the blog-friendly version above instead).

A month ago, I remembered the t-shirt and had to shake my head. Ipood. My sentiments exactly. Because my Ipod 8-gig nano, purchased in March of 2009 (after much hand-wringing- those things are bloody expensive), simply just upped and died. Actually, it was a long time coming. The screen started going all funny back in November, so it was hard to read the song titles. Then, at the beginning of May, the screen went completely white so that I couldn’t see what song was playing, and consequently could not use the search feature to play the songs I wanted to play. No matter, though. I could still, at least, listen to my music. And then, one day, my Ipod just wouldn’t turn on. It was dead. 14 months after purchase at $149 CDN plus tax. 2 months after the year-long warranty had expired. Bloody hell.

A week went by of me being Ipod-less. Which sucked. I use it all the time. My running suffered (I use it to curb boredom while jogging and can’t run without). Ironically, Liebling has just bought me a running armband especially for an Ipod from London. Boo-urns.

I reluctantly shelled out the money and got a new one. An 8-gig nano, just like the old one, except in metallic green instead of purple. I re-uploaded all my songs. Bliss. For about a week. Because,one day last week, it just wouldn’t turn on. I took it back to the store and they told me some mumbo-jumbo and made it fine again. But now I notice that the Ipod doesn’t play the song that it displays. This Ipod is two weeks old. I took it back to the store; they say I can’t return or exchange it and that I have to go to the service centre that deals specifically with Apple products. I repeat, this Ipod is two weeks old. I am flabbergasted that it’s already having issues. Is this a trend with Apple products? Or did I just get a lemon? Anybody have any experience with Apple products?

So yeah… Ipood. That sounds about right.

  • I gave my boyfriend my ipod nano and he's having similar problems with it. He also runs with it so I think he kind of wore it down from that. Before I gave it to him I think I had it for a year with no problems. After I gave it to him, he had it for a few months and now the keys stick and it won't allow him to change a song when the shuffle option is activated. I kind of think it's his fault though.

    But, usually apple products are pretty good. I have an ipod touch that my brother gave to me that is three years old, I think, and works fine. I think you might have just got a dud, twice. 🙁 Take it to the apple store, I hear that they do good jobs and, since it's still in warranty, it won't cost you anything. Good luck!

  • Yeah! My ipod up and died just like that about 2 months ago. For no apparent, rational reason. One second it was working, and then the next, not! So not impressed. I didn't bring it to the apple store as I want to upgrade anyway but your post is making me leary. I hope the next one I buy actually plays longer than a year (the time I had mine).

  • Hi Nikita,

    You left a post on my blog mentioning teaching in France. How does one go about doing that?

  • Wow….you have managed to get 2 lemons in a row I’d say!! I have an ipod nano from 2005 that I still use to this day. Seven years old. I have Apple everything except an iphone and I’m considering going over to the dark side and getting one when I move to London. I just can’t fathom the touchscreen keyboard but might have to. Bad luck I’d say!

    • Ugh, It’s so darn annoying but I still really like the interface which is why I bought the nano again!
