Whether the plan is to laze by the pool or swim in the ocean, the Balearics have it all. But these beautiful Spanish islands don’t just cater to the traditional holiday maker; there are plenty of remote retreats for the more discerning traveller.
Majorca
The biggest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca, has historically attracted Hollywood royalty and artistic talent. Although holidays to Magaluf still attract package tours, a governmental “quality tourism” policy has revitalised the island. Historic buildings have been transformed into boutique hotels and, although small, Majorca’s wine industry is not to be missed, most notably the Binissalem region.
If travelling to Magaluf or any other other resort on the island, the nearest airport is Palma and the city itself a marvel of handsome squares, narrow streets and traditional architecture. From here Deià, Alaró and the surrounding villages are all within easy reach.
Ibiza
Ibiza has long been known for its party atmosphere, but the clubbers of the ’80s have all grown up and come back with their families. As a result the island has fantastic restaurants, staffed accommodation and a sophisticated yet family-friendly air.
With the spiritual vibe first noted by the Phoenicians unchanged, Ibiza’s lush interior landscapes and relaxed coastal features are now the perfect backdrop for wellness and wellbeing. From yoga retreats to writing holidays, the clubbing capital of Europe still exists but the island now offers so much more.
Menorca
Although the coastline has more beaches than Majorca and Ibiza combined, Menorca offers more than sandy suntans as the summer horse festivals (jaelos) are unique to the island. The most important festivals are in June and September and with their traditional costumes, rousing music and home-grown gin, they are a fantastic opportunity to fully appreciate island life.
With the cobbled port cities and Baroque architecture (as well as a biosphere preserve designation) Menorca has a low-key approach to tourism which ensures that its megalithic stone structures and prehistoric monuments remain unscathed.
Formentera
Formentera is the smallest and most unprepossessing island of the Balearics. Less than 30 minutes by ferry from Ibiza, or accessible by yacht, many people visit for the day to soak up the utterly tranquil atmosphere. There is accommodation available, however, so it is possible to rent a scooter, stay a few days and thoroughly explore the 12-mile-long island.
In short, the Balearic Islands are perfect for rest, relaxation and revitalisation of self.
