Italy: A Stay in Sorrento

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

My mom and I hit up the Sorrentine Peninsula on our Italian holiday.

I struggled a bit when deciding where to take my mom on her first proper trip to Italy.  She only had a week in total and I wanted to make sure that she saw as many different things as possible without completely exhausting herself or us having to spend an inordinate amount of time on transportation. Rome was a given — her flight arrived in and departed from its international airport and most of the city’s sights are known the world over. I thus planned for three days in Rome and pondered what to do with the remaining four.  Should we go north or go south?  I pulled up a map of Italy on online and started weighing my options.

Source: Lonely Planet

Direction: Amalfi Coast

In the end, I made the executive decision to head south to the Amalfi Coast, a region of Italy I know and love.  It was to be a homecoming of sorts; I spent five highly enjoyable days there with Liebling back in 2010.  The reasons I chose to come here over, say, Florence, were manifold: I know the area pretty well, it’s relatively close to Rome (2-3 hours on the train), the region boasts a ridiculous amount of sunshine, and the towns along the coastline are super photogenic.  I also knew that I wanted to take my mom to nearby Naples and Pompeii, so I trusted that there was no way we would be bored for lack of things to do.

The Road to Sorrento

We based ourselves in Sorrento, just like Liebling and I did during our 2010 sojourn. We purchased tickets at Rome’s Termini train station and took the slow train to Naples (we bought the cheapest ticket available — 12 euros for a one way journey) . Once at Napoli Centrale we debarked and switched to the Circumvesuviana regional train (under 5 euros one way) and sat back for the hour long ride to Sorrento, privy to stunning views out the window the whole way.  Let me tell you, I love this town.  It is small, it is quaint, it is colourful.  Things and people move slowly here.  The concept of siesta (called riposo in Italy) exists strongly  in these parts: most places close down in the afternoon for at least two hours.  There’s not much going on here in terms of historical or cultural sights, and that’s perfectly okay. Put plainly, Sorrento is just pretty and a great place to lie low and relax for a few days. I felt it provided a welcome reprieve from our hectic time in Rome.

The small alleys are densely packed with markets and shops selling everything from fresh fruit to leather goods (the latter of which my mom and I happily overdosed on).

Limoncello, the Italy liqueur made primarily from lemons, is produced in high quantities here, so shops selling it, as well as many other goods made from lemons (think chocolate, soap, and candles), were seemingly at every corner.  My mom and I ducked into a few on our first afternoon, invited in by friendly vendors eager to show off their wares and make a sale.  My mom tippled a wee bit as there were generous offerings of the drink to sample.

Where we stayed

Hostelbookers arranged three nights for my mom and I at the Diana City B&B, a small guesthouse located at the end of Sorrento’s main drag.   Our room, equipped with a vertigo-inducing balcony, was spacious and boldly decorated. The bathroom, always a source of worry for me, was luckily large and clean. A 15-minute walk from the train station and a mere 5-minute walk from the markets and main square, the guesthouse was, without a doubt, extremely well placed.

In reading TripAdvisor reviews, however, I discovered that the property was directly in front of a hospital, and a fairly recent review complained of noise, which was worrying. However, despite our room directly facing the emergency ward’s driveway, we heard nothing for our entire three night stay.  Another thing to be aware of is that the second “B” in Diana City B&B doesn’t stand for “bed and breakfast”, but for “bed and bed” (yes, that confused me also!)– the guesthouse doesn’t offer breakfast service but they do leave a basket of complimentary treats in your room for your consumption daily. Very cute!

IMG_0405

It’s not fancy, but it is fresh, clean, and does the job at an incredible value — it’s only 85 euros ($110 USD) a night for a double room, which is a very good deal in expensive Italy.  I definitely recommend this place.

Perfect Base

Sorrento is the perfect base for exploring this area of Italy. The coastal towns of Positano, Ravello, Amalfi, and Praiano are a short bus or scooter ride (if you dare!) away. On one day, we hoofed it to Sorrento’s port and took a day trip to the island of Capri, which is only a half-hour ferry ride away, and the day after that we jumped back onto the Circumvesuviana train and visited Pompeii and Naples.

Have you ever been to Sorrento?

I was a guest of Hostelbookers and Diana City B&B but opinions, as always, are mine.

  • I visited Rome and Florence in my teens but have been dying to get back to Italy. I really wish we could do it like we did Spain — spend a few weeks making our way around the country — but we just don’t have the same holiday time. We’re thinking about an Italian trip next year but it will have to be short(er.)

    • Honestly, I think that even a 4-5 day extended weekend would be good to spend a bit of time in Rome and then another city! You’re lucky to live relatively close by. 🙂

  • I was in Sorrento only two weeks ago and your post has me pining to be back there! It was my first visit and I thought it was a superb place to use as a base for trips to so many other wonderful places as well as being beautiful in itself. I hope to return one day.

    • Very cool! Sounds like we were there at the same time! Did you stay in Sorrento or one of the other nearby towns?

  • Love the lemon photos! I’ve always wanted to visit Italy, but have no idea where to begin, you’ve given me some great ideas.

    • I think that Sorrento is a fabulous base because of its proximity to Rome and the other places I mentioned in the post! One factor in going is that I knew my mom could get her fill of history in the capital and then have some fun in the sun on the Amalfi Coast. 🙂

  • I know this is not my blog and you can do what you want but I feel uncomfortable hearing you recommend a hotel that you didn’t pay for. It sounds like a commercial and like you are trying to sell something. Also, if it were me and someone was offering me a gift of 85 euros, I would feel less inclined to say I hated it. I would just be so appreciative to be able to travel and save my own money (when it came to housing).

    • Hi Tiana! I appreciate you keeping it real in your comment and can understand where you’re coming from! I pay for 95% of my own travel, but from time to time do accept comps — I always state explicitly when this is the case. However, I’m never under any obligation to write anything positive and strive to keep my reviews as honest as possible, and if you’re a frequent reader you’ll see that I also endorse/review tons of things I’ve paid for myself. 🙂

      • I love your blog! You are an inspiration. Keep doing what you Love and just ignore the haters.

  • Love this post! I went to Sorrento and Capri when I was 14 and it left such an impression on me. Now that I’m in my early 20’s I’m lucky to have a job (I’m a chef on a cruise ship!) that brings me back to some of my favorite places a few times in the year. Last year I got to visit three times during the summer and I’ll be returning again this summer. Your pictures have me excited again!

P.S. Love your blog so much! 🙂

  • I was in Sorrento just a few months ago! From there we went to Capri as well. It was lovely. I remember not wanting to ever leave. After hours of trekking in Capri, I remember my boyfriend and I going up those stairs from the port to the main city. Uffa! It was good exercise, though (my bf didn’t want to take the elevator haha).

  • I love Italy so much but I’ve unfortunately yet to explore the south. It is without doubt on my to-do list if only for the limoncello! I have such good memories of one of my friends granny’s homemade ice-cold limoncello and it was probably one of the best drinks I have ever tasted. Buonissimo!

  • I looove Italy so much. When I still lived in the UK I used to go to Italy at least once a year. There is so much to do and see there. I have never been to the Amalfi coast, but would love to go one day.

  • I absolutely love Italy, I’ve been there 3 times and I know that I still haven’t seen anything! Italy is so rich in culture, history and oh food! I’ve never visited the Sorrento area but it seems so picturesque and so Italian! Have you ever been to Sicily? Just been there in May and loved it. The south of Italy is so different to the north, it has its own character. If you’ve never been to Sicily you should consider it for a future trip babe 🙂 Glad to see so many fun pictures if you and your mum, you’re such an inspiration 🙂

  • Lovely pictures of Sorrento. I miss that city, the colors, the duomo and the lemons so huge and full of flavor. This makes me want to book a ticket!

  • Sorrento perfect place for a holiday visit in Italy. It has a few tourist attractions, preferably with a nice time, and the place is well connected by airways, roads and other means of communication. Especially if we like to have our family vacation, we often love to be a place that is safe and mostly crime free.

I’m not saying this is ok, but when you think of sexual assault

except for Horrible Bosses 2 that glories sexual assault (and
in this case, it’s a woman that rapes a man. I’ve never seen American Pie, but I do know a bit about it you shouldn’t generalize every American teen movie based on that.
