Mexico: Zacatecas

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

My first solo trip ever took place when I hopped on a bus heading to Zacatecas.

I had been living in Monterrey for about a month, and really wanted to see more of Mexico. It was Friday morning and, while I was looking forward to the weekend, I was I was itching to get out of Monterrey and see something different. On my lunch break at work I started investigating possible weekend destinations, and saw that I could hop on a bus that evening, arriving at Zacatecas in the early morn.

So that’s what I did. And it was fantastic.

Zacatecas is a town known for its mines and abundance of cheap silver. It is a colonial town, with colonial archictecture, which was a nice switch from the modern structures of Monterrey. The city Zacatecas, is actually the capital of the Zacatecas state, and is two states southwest of Nuevo Leon (the state of which Monterrey is the capital).

Upon my arrival at the Zacatecas coach station at 4:30am, I flagged a cab and had it drop me off at the only hostel I had found online while making my harried and hurried travel plans. It was full. No beds left, but the owner told me that I could sleep on the couch in the common area and wait until morning, as some guests would be departing.

I got a dorm room later on and promptly met two Mexican girls (coincidentally from Monterrey) in the hallway. We hung out for the two days of my stay.

We visited the mines, the markets selling silver goods, took a cable car where we had breathtaking views of the city and had good Mexican cuisine.

Sometimes best trips are the spontaneous ones!
