New York, New York! (Part 1)

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I spent six days in New York City two weeks ago. My primary reason for going was to catch up with a number of my friends from home, who defected from Toronto and moved to NYC for work and study. Me and two girlfriends who still live in Toronto took advantage of this opportunity to have a grand reunion with our friends in the Big Apple.

The last time I had gone to NYC was early 2008. I spent New Year’s there, as well as the days following. I had fun, but it was cold.

But NYC in the summer? Umm, YES PLEASE.

After a ridiculously stupid plane delay in Toronto by American Airlines (soo not impressed), my two friends and I landed in New York’s JFK 1.5 hours after our scheduled arrival. We made the lonnnnnng trek via AirTrain and NYC Subway to where we would be staying- my friends’ J and J’s fly bachelorette pad in Harlem.

Too tired for much other than catching up on all the gossip that had transpired since we had last all seen each other, we made it an early one and slept soundly.

The next morning we were up and raring to go. Feeling fancy, I got up extra early and went for a run in Central Park, located oh-so-conveniently a mere 5 blocks from J & J’s apartment.

After a bit (a lot) of primping and preparation (hey, we were in New York, we needed to make sure we looked good!), my friends and I took pictures of the environs of Harlem before heading down to Manhattan to meet with other friends and go- you guessed it- shopping. Don’t you just love the buildings and architecture? So very very NYC.

Ah, Manhattan. The New York of movies and chick lit. How I love you.

Our first stop was a department store that I had never heard of called Daffy’s. Now, I don’t know anything about this shop, but I have to say that it was rife with a number of fashion failures and I doubt that I’d ever shop there again. Check out some of the “gems” that we found:

I mean, really? Gold lame shrugs? Lime green brocaded and pink leopard trench coats?? Misshapen hot pink sequined tees? Ooh lord, chile, I don’t even know where to start- there were just too many fashion disasters in too small of a shopping radius. Maybe Lada Gaga could pull some of this stuff off, but needless to say, I wont be returning to Daffy’s in the near future. The unfortunate clothes reminded me of Emily’s fashion show experience at the W Hotel in Santiago

The day continued with us soaking up the big city atmosphere. I bought a pair of $5 fake Ray-Bans (my friend calls them Fay-Bans) from a street-side vendor and accorded myself the simplest of pleasures: a pedicure.

In the evening we got into our Sunday, erm, Friday best and headed off to the most “New York” thing to do in our loose itinerary: see a show on Broadway. We went to see “Rent”, though I’m not too sure I could tell you what is was about since I slept through about half of it (FAIL!). It would seem as though my early morning run and subsequent all-day walking tour of Manhattan left me too tuckered to enjoy the show. Bah. At least I looked cute.

To finish off the evening, we went to a bar/club called Tillman’s, where the stank-ass doorman, who charged us $10 for cover but refused to make change for our $20 bills (erm, why!??!), nearly soured the night. Luckily, I wasn’t too affected and still managed to dance the night away with reckless abandon, as evidenced below.

I also got to have a massive grilled cheese sandwich there, which helped to assuage my annoyance.

Feet on fire, we went home and collapsed into bed (I may or may not have washed my face before passing out). But that’s how we do it in New York! Stay tuned for more updates from my trip to the Big Apple.

Have you ever been to New York? Are you a fan? What did you do and see while there? For you native New Yorkers, what is the best thing about your city?

  • Haha, I'm pretty sure the stylist for that fashion show shops at Daffy's, you're right!

Bummer that you fell asleep during Rent – I saw it in NYC years ago and loved it – but at least you looked gorg as usual.

  • You looked gorgeous! Could tell at all that you were jetlagged. I lived in NYC for 4 years. It's my fave city in the world! It was pretty intense during the Summer though…oh so hot and smelly haha. That grilled cheese looked YUM!!!

  • I went to NYC this summer, and I gotta ask.. how in the WORLD did you trek around in heels!? I was in pain in my regular shoes!

  • I have lots of family in NYC, but I am not a big fan of the city. At all. I feel like I am suffocating there.

  • I love the dress you wore to the Broadway show. In fact I have one just like it in purple but could never figure out how to wear it. Why didn't I think of a belt? lol

  • lol, those clothing were hideosooo.
your blue dress is fire hot.
Yes, i have been to ny and it is one of favorite places this far in my travels. what an amazing city. i cannot wait to get some more laughs and see pretty ny on your adventure.

  • @Earthichick: Thank you! It's actually a t-shirt and a skirt that I got from H & M last year! I'm a big fan of scarves, I think I'll wear more this fall!

@Emily: LOL! I immediately thought of you and your post when I saw these awful fashions! Rent seems to be a great show, but I was just so freaking exhausted by the day's events that I couldn't get it together, sigh. But thanks for the compliment! 🙂

@Andi: I forgot that you had gone to school there! Where were you living? Grilled cheese was soooo good, but I was sooo bloated afterward!

@Deidre: It's probably worse in the summer! After living in Hong Kong, though, I barely noticed the crowds, the heat, or the smog! Funny how one's perspective can change depending on their surroundings!

@Nicki: Thanks! I literally bought it off a clothing rack in an alleyway in Hong Kong for less than $10! It was kinda shapeless but I threw the belt on and instantly loved it!

@Rhona: NYC is one of those places that you really need to have the time to discover, I think! In this way it's similar to Toronto. I had the chance to see a few places, but I think I would probably need years to really capture the essence of New York!

  • That picture of you in the subway in the blue dress is hot! I love it. I love riding the NYC subway, it makes me feel local, lol.

  • Hey pretty lady!!! You're NYC trip and caribana pics look fab. I LOVE doing girls trips to NYC (and MIA). You have to do a post/trip to MIA with the girls, maybe for New Year's Eve or something, it's defintely fun around that time. NYC just doesn't compare to any other city, it's one of a kind. It's defintely on my radar once I finish school. I'm still reading through you're archives- post (from Bali/Easter). I see you've got LOTS going on with the upcoming trips and move in the fall- good luck with everything. Hopefully you will be able to connect with some of the London bloggers and expats while you're there, as well as the other popular bloggers in France, Spain, Germany etc). I can't wait to read about it. I'm in town for another week and then I'm off again so let me know if you're still here and want to meet up sometime. Oh, your hair looks really good, it's coming into shape now. It's grown so much since the "trimming incident".

  • Aaaaah, Daffy's. They promise low prices, but then…. 🙂 I can't believe you feel asleep during Rent. 🙂 Nice! Broadway shows are quite long in general, so I don't blame you. Tillman's opened at a time when I was just not going out. I haven't been but I've heard okay things about it. Being an old married lady, I don't get out like I used to. I'm glad you enjoyed NYC. Next time we have to get you out to Brooklyn. 🙂

  • So you had fun in my city! Seeing ur pics made me miss it (hmm!)

As for Daffys, its good for stuff like leather gloves and winter scarves at discounted prices. I get them there instead of here, as it is much cheaper.

I do miss the Broadway shows as well, since for me to see shows in English, I've got to leave AMS and go to London!

    Glad u had fun!

  • Just found your blog via SITS! So sorry you didn't have a good time at Tillman's LOVE that place and yeah, Daffy's is pretty ghetto. LOL! Overall, looks like you had a fun trip =)

  • LOL @ at your Daffy's fashion show! It really is that bad. I'll pop into Daffy's to take a look at their housewares from time to time. And once in a BLUE MOON you might find a nice pair of socks or something. But yeah, we New Yorkers aren't fans of Daffy's either 😉
Great seeing you the other day! Hopefully I'll catch you again across the pond!

  • @Mamacita: It's funny you say that about the subway, because after the first day of bumbling, I felt like a real New Yorker when I got the routes down!

@Samantha: Thanks, lady! I got your email, sorry I haven't responded yet! I'm around town for one more week so maybe we can try to meet for coffee!! Will email you!

@Terri: Old?! Whatever!!! LOL! Tillman's was good but the doorman had a MAJOR attitude problem. Yes, next time I'm in NYC you are definitely giving me the tour of BK!!!

@kuesooM: Not sure what was up with Daffy's, but sorry I didn't check out their leather goods section as I am in the market for a belt!

@Qiana: The funny thing is that my friend recommended it and said that she got lots of nice dresses from there! I must have gone to the wrong section, though!

@Stacy: LOL! Daffy's was a trip! And there was this guy working there who took it upon himself to start serenading me… Oh goodness. Anyway, keep me posted on your trip to London town and I hope to see you soon (either in NYC or Europe, but I'm hoping for Europe.. ;-)! )

  • One sentence: you chickies are hawt! Love the blue dress at Tillman's!

  • I MUST be missing something as, from what I saw of NY, am not impressed. I mean, having a stiff neck from constantly looking at the skyscrapers is not my idea of fun. Mind, I visited in summer and the humid weather added to my discomfort.
These kinds of posts will encourage me to give such places another chance. Danke, merci!

  • The gold lame shrug made my eyes throw up a little. Who keeps making stuff like that?! There a reason the name is also an adjective..

  • @foosrock: Different strokes for different folks, lol. I don't know that NYC is one of my fav cities, but I love the fast pace and intensity. Glad you enjoyed the post!

    @joycey4: LOL! Exactly!

There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She
