I think that the recent earthquake in Japan has everyone quaking in their boots, and rightfully so. I’m fine here in Hong Kong (we haven’t been affected at all, thank goodness!), but it’s crazy to think that a mere three-hour flight away there has been such devastation. It’s also strange to think that the effects of the earthquake/tsunami have been felt as far away as places as the United States (I read that the U.S. Pacific coast was on tsunami watch and had a number of warnings), while the only thing experienced here, just a few hours south, is a high tide warning.
The Asian-Pacific region is a hotspot for earthquakes and tsunamis and typhoons. New Zealand had a massive earthquake just the other day, Japan had been rocked by two other earthquakes this past week, and every year most of south-east Asia suffers from typhoons. In my first months in Asia upon my move here back in mid-2009, I not only survived my first Typhoon 8 in Hong Kong, but also out-ran the Philippines’ super-typhoon (see my posts about that experience here and here).
I am okay here in Hong Kong, but my thoughts and prayers go out to anyone affected by the tragedy in Japan.
Anyway, just to lighten the mood of this post, I leave you with these recent pictures of I took of Liebling with my new camera (Panasonic’s Lumix LX5, what what!). I’ve been trying to fiddle around with the cam (though I haven’t yet read the instructional manual.. hmmm)so naturally Liebling was my guinea pig/model, bless his heart. Germany’s Next Top Model!! Here’s a shout-out to my sweetie, who always patiently lets me take his picture even though he generally hates being in them. Aww!

and YAY! you got the camera – it's great isn't? and the video quality looks really great for such a small cam. i can already see how well it handles low light on the pics you showed here – doesn't look like you use flash on 'em (did you?) and they are still so bright. love my lumix lx5. you'll do a little review after you've played with it a bit, ya?

When I received a text from my parents about the equake in Japan, I was so shocked and thought "oh, no, not again!" I've been grieving for a few weeks about the equake in NZ – seeing a town I lived in devastated and my fellow country people suffer has been heartbreaking. The images from Japan are so devastating, I really feel for them. I'm glad you are ok, keep safe.

And I'm really happy that you're ok and everyone you know is ok. I just keep thinking about the people in Japan and then having flashbacks to the quake in Chile. Mother Nature's a bitch sometimes.
lovely pics! That camera seems awesome. I need to get a new one eventually, but as an amateur photographer, I know nothing about choosing the best one for my needs. I'm generally intimidated by anything technological!
I feel so horrible for all those people in Japan (and NZ) and my heart goes out to them. News about the quake and the tsunami is all over the tv here in France and the footage gets harder and harder to watch.
Glad to hear you're ok. It's a scary world out there and we've got to take refuge in our loved ones and enjoy every minute. Easier said than done. You and Liebling are way too photogenic. I'm jealous!

I've actually had it for a month or so and have used it for the pics on the last few posts but have been way to lazy to figure out all the settings- one day! I love how bright the night shots are without a flash! Review (is maybe) forthcoming. 🙂

@kiwi: You're right, I had SO much trouble trying to decide! I am horrible with technology in general so trying to research which camera to get was a real pain! I wanted a cam that had manual controls but still relatively small (I think I don't have the courage to use/carry a DSLR- not yet, anyway)! You know, as for NZ, I never realized that Christchurch and the surrounding area was on a fault line as well! I feel terrible about NZ and Japan and don't even have a personal connection to any of these places! How difficult for you- I hope that you are doing well and not too shaken up by Feb 22…

@Mamacita: Mother Nature is really off her rocker and keeping herself busy wreaking havoc on helpless folks… Sigh… I am loving the camera- still relatively small and lots of buttons to play with! I'm pleased because I took all of these photos on the auto setting and they turned out pretty good! Maybe one day I'll graduate to a DSLR 🙂 …
@Crystal: I hear ya, sister!!! I agonized over what camera to buy for WEEKS- bugged Liebling and all my friends for their opinion. As I'm a real amateur I wanted something easy but with good photo quality… I almost bought the Canon S95, though- it also takes good pics but doesn't have as many manual functions I believe. Look into it! The footage is just sad. I can't believe all that is happening so close by! It was sunny and gorgeous today in HK!

I think that Liebling has a lovely smile and look about him when he takes photos, but I imagine that I'm just a little biased.. 🙂 I always find my face and smile kind of wide in photos so that's so nice of you to say that I'm photogenic! And yes, it is SO important not to take loved ones for granted- you never know when tragedy can strike!
