On the road again… Destination: Stockholm

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Still gotta write about Berlin. But I probably wont have the time because I’ll be on my way to Sweden for the weekend with Liebling. We found a cheap flight and so we booked and will be on our merry way to Stockholm on Friday.

I know NOTHING about Sweden, except the stereotypical stuff:
– it’s the birthplace of H&M and Ikea.
– they have something called Swedish meatballs.
– people there are supposedly tall and blonde.
– it is expensive.

And I’m sure that this information is based on half-truths. Except for the expensive part. Liebling and I (or rather Liebling, as I passed out on the couch) spent two hours online last night trying to book a decent hotel room in Stockholm. We (ahem, he) had a devil of a time trying to find one that was, on the one hand, relatively close to the center, and, on the other hand, under 100 Euros a night. In the end (h)(w)e found one for 97 Euros a night- hopefully there wont be any rats or roaches.

We leave on Friday evening, fly into Skavsta airport (one of three airports in Stockholm and the faaaaarthest from the city centre) and make the long pilgrimage into the city. And then… I don’t know. And that’s where you offer me suggestions.

Has anyone ever been? Help the lovely German and plucky Canadian.
Just what the heck IS there to DO in Stockholm?

  • I would definitely recommend wandering about Södermalm, which is a district on the island south of Gamla Stan. It's a pretty cool neighborhood with loads of good shopping (esp. Beyond Retro, which is by far one of the best vintage stores I've ever seen) and there are plenty of Stockholm fashionistas to check out. Also, while Gamla Stan can feel a little played out (there are about a million and one tourist shops all on the same block) it's nice to check out, and there are some good clubs and restaurants just a few blocks away from the really touristy part. Should you have time, you might also want to do a day trip to the archipelago – I've never been, but almost all the Stockholm natives I've met go there in the summer religiously!

    Have fun 🙂

  • I have no idea either but I'm planning on going there one of these days, so let me know about your hotel! Have fun!

  • @Naomi: THANK YOU for all the recommendations! This is awesome. I left my mega "Best of Europe" Lonely Planet guide at in Canada and really don't want to buy a guide for two days in Stockholm. I definitely will take all of your suggestions into account! Thanks again!

@Jennie- Thanks so much! I'll be sure to write about the hotel! I was actually thinking of your Italian EasyJet fiasco this past weekend when I was in the airpot in Berlin waiting to fly back to London: the flight was over an hour late! I hate EasyJet!

  • There is a coffee shop (a chain one I think) that had amazing carrot cake when I was there, the coffee wasn't bad either and it's a nice place to hangout. It's called "Espresso Bar". Sorry I don't have much to suggest, I went near the end of my trip so funds were low, so I did what's free…walked around and checked out the sights.

  • They have lovely museums, The Nordiska for history, Skansen an outdoor museum, the art museum, the modern art museum, the Theil gallery, etc. But the coolest is the Vasa museum, with the Swedish version of the Titanic, a ship that went down on it's maiden voyage right in the harbor. They brought it up and it is very cool. But Stockholm in the summer is awesome. You can wander around the old town and parks for days on end. I'm so jealous, Stockholm is one of my all time favorites. Enjoy.

  • I second Natalie for Vasa. If you have an inenr child, try Astrid Lindgren museum. Skansen may not be as good as in high season. Take a boat trip that serves as a sightseeing boat. Do go to see the Town hall where they award Nobel prizes.

As a blogger, maybe still enough time to pitch Stockholm City Card?

  • I believe that none of the brothers who have experienced the peak of Nigo have an inescapable feeling for the BAPE brand. When the domestic trend in the millennium was just starting, a pair of BBC flying dog pants, a BAPE Tee, and a pair of BAPE STA , Coupled with a gangster necklace, you can become the brightest BAPE STAR among the trendy people of that era!
