Primark clothing store = My new obsession

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I recently discovered Primark.  Oh happy day.

For those who don’t know Primark, it is a cheapie clothing store, what I consider to be the less expensive, country cousin to my first love, H&M.  While I’m typically a one-store kinda girl, faithful to my beloved Hennes and Mauritz to a fault (I wrote about my unrequited love here), I’ve been thinking of cheating.  Here’s why:

Primark is DIRT cheap.
I initially got lured into Primark after (window) shopping in H&M, Topshop, and Mango, and being disillusioned by the ridiculous prices. 40 quid for a lycra skirt? Heck no.  I’m unemployed on a budget.  I can’t afford to roll like that.  After hearing friends yammer on about the place, I reluctantly went in last
week.  Those pantyhose that H&M was selling for 7.50 GBP? I got them in Primark for 2. Then proceeded to buy three more pairs for good measure.

If you don’t like crowds, DO NOT go to Primark on a Saturday at busy Oxford Street.

Primark is trendy.
Primark is cheap and yet still manages to keep up with the current trends.  The clothes were cute.  The prices made the cuter.  The quality isn’t the best, but if you’re not too sure about those harem pants that are all the rage, you can pick up a cheapie pair in Primark and not feel too bad about jettisoning them in the trash once you realize how unflattering they are. A few people have told me that Primark is even known as Primarni (a hybrid of the names Primark and Armani) here in the UK, though I am unsure as to whether or not that reference is sarcastic.

SERIOUSLY.

Primark is EVERYWHERE.
In the last four days, I have been in three Primarks in three different locations.  I haven’t been looking for them; they are just there.  This is perhaps the best marketing strategy ever.  If you build it, they will come, or at least stumble upon it in their travels.  Primark is becoming the black hole that sucks me in when I happen to cross its path. Who am I to refuse its allure?

Have you ever been to Primark?

Psst! Don’t forget to “like” me on Facebook if you haven’t already! Your support is much appreciated!

  • I love me some Primarni (it's true, we do call it that, similar to how in Australia, Target is Tar-jay). Their opaque tights are the longest wearing I've had and I love a lot of their £4 ballet flats as well.

  • Coming out of lurkdom for this. I love Primarni( thats what my two brothers that live there called it). I've been to London four times, the last time this past August. This is the first store I make sure to get to whenever I'm there. And I am never disappointed in the products. To me Primark is like Conway in NYC, just that Conway's clothes are of a lesser quality. Love your blog.Been following it like forever but never commented.

  • I haven't been to Primark in YEARS, and I definitely have memories of it as just being cheap rather than cheap and chic. I'll have to give it another chance on this visit!

  • I've not been to Primark, but I too absolutely LOVE H&M! My sis and her family live in Sweden, and when I go and visit them I make sure H&M has a high priority on my to do list, lol. I'll have to visit Primark if I get the chance …of course on a day that it is not too crowded 🙂

  • Ooohhh! I've never been to this store before! But seeing as I always end up in London some way some how, I will have to make a visit next time I am there 🙂

  • I used to get laughed at for shopping at primark, but in the last 5 years it's become the Mecca for all cheap fashionable wear in the UK…and yes,Primark is also known as 'Primarni' no jokes.

  • @Sue, we call Target, Tarjay here in the States too! Well at least those of us in Michigan do…

  • Not been to Primark, but can say in the last festive month have really got used to the scenario with so much shopping to do, almost 2-3 times a week.

  • Oh Primark!! That place is heavenly. Is it weird that half my wardrobe is Primark and I don't even live in the UK?! Haha. I must admit, my favourite one is the one on Oxford St. I've visited others outside London and their stock isn't the greatest. Enjoy your shopping!!!

  • I have a tendency to call Patagonia clothes patagucci because they're so expensive 🙂

    Never heard of Primark

  • Welcome to the world of the cheap and cheerful! My absolute favourites for inexpensive, usually on trend but nice quality goodies are H&M, New Look and Peacocks! I rarely venture into Primark – I got burned a few years ago when I went a bit crazy on sighting the prices and bought stuff I really shouldn't have from there- knickers, bra's etc. They shrunk or fell apart pretty sharpish I can tell you, lol..
Anyways I recently picked up a cute denim mini at Primark for a tenner which was very well made. If one is strategic one can pick up gems in these stores which last far longer than what you expected considering the prices. If you are after real leather, cute flats look no further than New Look which makes very nice ones for roughly 15-19 pounds each. There is a fashionista's blog I check into daily (stalk:)); she is a fashion stylist for a major magazine and buys many of her flats from there. Validation!lol

  • @Sue- I think it will be my new go-to for tights from now on!

@Erica- Thanks for coming out of lurkdom and glad you are enjoying! I've never been to Conway but will have to make it there the next time I'm in NYC!

@Emily- I was honestly quite impressed with it, so you'll have to give it another try when you get here!

@Ajoa- I think I still like H&M better overall, but you can't beat the prices at Primark!

@Ashley- Be sure to put it on your list!

@Anon- I'm not laughing now that I've been- Primark has got it going on!

@Mae- I've also heard of Target being pronounced that way in the States! We don't have Target in Canada, though.

@Kalyan- Nice! Another blogging friend of mine is in Delhi and recently did a post on going to the mall there. It was huge!

@PAPS- Luckily I don't mind crowds, but I do hate waiting at the cash register to pay.

@Deidre- Not sure I've heard of Patagonia either. What type of clothes do they sell? Is it Australian?

@sprite- You know, I've passed New Look a few times but have never gone in. Thanks for the tip about the flats, will have to go in there next time to check it out as I'm currently on the hunt for a good pair!

  • There are Primarks all over the UK and Ireland (called Pennys). You don't have to come into London!

Oneika I hear you're coming Saturday – spot on!

  • I'm coming to this post late, but OHHHH BOY do I miss Primark!!! I bought up about ten £3 tank tops before I left and I still wear them as a wardrobe staple. My £15 ankle boots survived a Toronto winter (barely) and the £2 or £3 flats are my go-to (I've gone through about seven pairs in two years). My old flatmate even sent me a pair in the mail last month…brought tears to my eyes!

The Oxford Street one is madness, even on a Tuesday morning at 10am, but it's actually worth it. Ooooh but if you ever get to Cambridge, their Primark is super pretty. Guildford, where I lived, opened theirs a week before I moved…devastated.

Seriously, you're going to be obsessed! Lucky, lucky girl.

  • @Mrs. Pancakes: I agree!

@Patricia: But NYC has so many other cool shops! I've been to Rainbow before, it seems kind of similar.

@withinireland: I am! Looking forward to meeting you!

@Lindsay: Primark is definitely a steal! I'm not too fazed about the quality being a tad sub-par; I mean, it's so cheap that if your shoes or flats fall apart you can just go back and buy another pair (or three)! As for Primark locations, I just discovered one in the new Westfield mall that they built in Stratford (Northeast London). It is massive and hasn't been very busy the two times I went!

  • I feel you! I only got to go once, but I absolutely loved it! I got a suitcase, a cute bag for books, and a billion scarves. And if I had more time, I would have spent more money. And I still love the stuff I got from there and use it. People always compliment the scarves I got. Oh Primark. Amazing.
