Out and About NYC: Sage restaurant in Brooklyn

I’ve decided to start a new series on the blog chronicling various attractions, restaurants, and things to do and see in NYC! 

International travel is great, but discovering what lies in your own backyard is necessary, too, especially when you live in a place like New York City.

And The Big Apple, if nothing else, is extremely international, with such a diversity of things to do, see, and sample that the whole world is basically on your doorstep anyway.

So when my girl Timidi of the new Youtube channel Amaso & Co. (she’s dope! Check her out!) proposed we go out for Thai food in Brooklyn,  I responded with an enthusiastic yes.  I’ve gushed about my love for Thailand on this blog and its cuisine is one of my faves.  And while I’ve been doing my fair share of exploring New York, Brooklyn is still relatively unknown to me. Our lunch date was the perfect opportunity to fill my belly and learn more about this new home of mine!

Thus, a couple of Thursdays ago I left my digs in Long Island City, Queens (can I tell you how much I love my new neighbourhood? Profile to come), hustled to the G train (New Yorkers will tell you that this is the absolute WORST subway line, avoid if possible), and headed to Sage, a Thai restaurant in the super hipster area of Brooklyn known as Williamsburg.

The decor is contemporary chic, with no hint to its cuisine’s provenance.  But the restaurant’s offerings are undisputedly Thai, as was our lovely waitress.

And about those offerings… Sage has a lunch special where you get an appetizer and an entree for either $8 or $9! I’ve found dining out in New York City pretty expensive so far, so was pleasantly surprised by such a bargain.  That was it– I was in love with this place and hadn’t even seen the food. The only question that remained was what to order. After a bit of deliberation, we both started with the shrimp dumplings. No complaints there. But what to choose for the main? IMG_3502Confession: I adore Thai cuisine but I usually one get one of two things– a green curry with chicken or a seafood pad thai. I flirted briefly with the idea of being adventurous and trying something different… But I was hungry, y’all.  So when the green curry called my name, I went a-running.  And boy, was I happy I did.  Pure yum!

Thankfully Timidi decided to venture out of her comfort zone and order the drunken noodle (despite craving a rice dish). She liked it, and we both gave extra points for the colourful presentation. IMG_3513

In fact, the whole experience was such a giant thumbs up, we had to take a couple silly selfies (or are they called “usies”?) to celebrate the wicked vibes. Good food on the cheap? We like!

  • Check out places in Harlem! Marcus Samuelsson’s new spot “Streetbird” is supposed to be delicious and more affordable than his Harlem institution “Red Rooster”.

  • GIRL! Now you know there are so many great places to eat and I could go on and on forever. I am a big fan of food markets (and I have whole posts dedicated to them), but some of my fave places to eat are in BK and also in the LES! LIC also has a budding food scene, and you should def check out Smorgasburg in your neighborhood.

  • Welcome to Queens, the most internationally diverse municipality in the world. It even beat out London,lol. As a native queens girl I think the best Thai can be found at Sri Pra Phai ( I frequent the Williston Park location). But if you’re in the mood for various asian cuisines then you have to make and taste your way through Flushing. Indian food, the same for Jackson Heights. Greek food then Astoria. And there are tons more to eat,lolol. Also, If you’re living in Queens it is best to get a car for island travel (Queens, BK, Nassau and Suffolk counties) because the MTA simply does not care for anyone!

  • I was in BK a couple weekends back and happily returned to Caracas Arepas and made my first visit to Madiba–it happened to be on Nelson Mandela’s birthday that Saturday which made things particularly special. Do full-joy being spoiled with the bounty that is NYC. Add those two joints if you didn’t have too much in the way of Venezuelan and South African-inspired food in SE Asia!

  • Ippudo near Union Square is my all-time favourite place for ramen, and Calexico has some great deals on Mexican fare for lunch. And if you’re ever craving Indian, Saravana Bhavan on the UWS [Amsterdam and 72nd-ish] has the best thali I’ve ever tasted outside of India. Oh, last one — Fred’s on the UWS is a great place for brunch, and their homemade strawberry butter is to die for. And now that I’ve made myself hungry, I’ll move on 🙂

    As for attractions, I always love exploring the Museum of Natural History on the UWS. Two places I’ve still not been able to make it to but that fascinate me to no end are Ellis Island and the Tenement Museum [perhaps I’ve got a bit of an obsession with NY history]. Would love to read your thoughts if you ever make it to either of those!

  • There are over 24,000 restaurants in NYC. My favorite Asmara (Eritrean cuisine) on Amsterdam close to Columbia University. While the weather is nice make it out to City Island in the Bronx. I go all the way to the end, sit outside and watch those on the water.

  • I stop reading your blog for a bit and come back to a pleasant surprise…you’re now living in my city! Welcome, welcome, my favourite travel blogger! And yes, the G train sucks but it has improved in recent years so now you can enjoy mediocre service as opposed to abysmal so…yay, progressl!

    Some great restaurants to try are Chayhana Salom and Kashkar Cafe in Brooklyn. Both serve absolutely delicious Uzbek food which is reasonably priced. I wouldn’t recommend either place if you’re not a fan of lamb though, as a lot of the dishes are quite lamb-heavy. I’d also suggest trying some Nigerian food at Buka, which is also in Brooklyn. It’s possibly the only Nigerian restaurant in NYC and their food is really good and as a Nigerian, I can vouch for its authenticity!

  • If you like Asian food, definitely go to Pig and Khao on the Lower East Side. Another delicious place in Williamsburg is The Saint Austere. The tasting menu is THE BOMB. The G train is my train; it’s not so bad. No worse than the C. Hmph!
