I‘m slowly but surely discovering London’s bar and restaurant scene, so have decided to start a new series on the blog detailing some of the places I have had the pleasure of sampling. Last Friday, Liebling suggested we go to
Madison, so he could get a drink and unwind after a long work week. I love seeing new places, so of course I said yes!
Located in the heart of the finance district, this new bar is popular with after-work set. When we went on Friday evening, it was stuffed to the gills with people dressed in suit and ties, celebrating the end of the work week. While I felt a tad undressed in my booties and opaque tights, people were too busy carousing to notice or care.
I don’t drink alcohol, and we didn’t eat, so I can’t really comment on the quality of their offerings. But I DO have eyes. And Madison, located on the top floor of the One New Change shopping centre, has a view of St. Paul’s Cathedral that is to die for. Liebling and I spent 15 minutes taking pictures of the view before entering the bar. More accurately, I spent 15 minutes taking pictures of the view, while Liebling cringed and waited for me to finish. But the view is gorgeous, no?
The inside decor was also stylish, with the dim light making the place feel intimate and exclusive even though there were a large amount of people inside. We had a lovely server who managed to find us seating swiftly despite the crowd, then helped me move my chair so that I could sit facing the huge window that gave a sweeping panorama of the London skyline.
We only ordered drinks (lame, I know), but they seemed to be moderately priced. I got a Sprite and Liebling got a beer and we paid 6.50 GBP altogether. I managed to sneak a peek at the menu and they have a full range of goodies to sate your appetite. While the plates seemed pricey, I am unsure of the portion size and taste, and thus cannot comment on the overall value/ bang for your buck.
What I can comment is that I really enjoyed the location and ambience of Madison, and hope to go back soon! If you’re in London and wanting to check it out, please invite me so I can go again…

How are you finding the overall prices of things in London? I'm so used to euros now that I saw 6.50 and thought "oh that's not too bad!" then I remembered that the pound is a lot higher than the euro…

The pub culture is one of the things I love about London! Back home people rarely go out for drinks with their coworkers, and over in London they even have pub quiz nights together!
The views are to DYE for wow! I've definitely got to check out this spot next time I go to London ( which is never cough, cough BROKE lolz).
@Audrey: Yes, I find that so interesting here! I think it's cool to have that really good rapport with one's colleagues, though! Back home work life and home life are completely seperate, I agree! I've never done a pub quiz here, but have done one in Hong Kong and had the best time!

Also, what camera do you use? I envy your night shots – I just can't seem to get those on my point and shoot, but never want to take my DLSR out for a night out!
@Lindsay: Thanks! No visits planned for the near future? Now that I've left Hong Kong, a London-Toronto flight seems so short! Would love to meet you in person! Anyway, I use the Lumix LX5 for all my photos and can't rave enough about it. It's a hybrid camera- between a point and shoot and DSLR, and only slightly bigger than your standard digicam. I love it because it has manual controls. I've been toying with the idea of getting a DSLR, but like you, I know that I would probably never bring it out at night! For my next camera, though, I'll probably get a micro four-thirds- Lumix makes one called the GF3 and it looks AMAZING and is super small!
I remember my school trips to St Pauls – one of the highlights of growing up in London, I think.
By London standards, the prices are extremely moderate. Eating out at nice places is quite expensive, so this place looks good for most budgets.
How are you finding London living?

@notjustanothermilla: I agree that the prices are fairly moderate, but I think that after living in Hong Kong and Canada (which are both very expensive!) that I don't bat an eyelash at the prices here. I think living in London is great but wish it had a bit more sun!
