Stepping out in London: Singing in the Rain (the Musical)

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Last Friday I got a bit of culture and went to see the musical theatre production of Singin’ in the Rain.

A friend that I had made during my stint in Hong Kong was here in London visiting me for the week, so it was the perfect excuse to go.  Since it was her first time in London and I wanted to make sure that her stay was as interesting and fun as possible, I had been plotting things for us to do for a while. After asking around and consulting my brand spanking new London 2012 guide gifted to me by the kind folks at Frommers (who will actually be sponsoring a guidebook giveaway on this blog!!! Details to come!!), I decided that taking my friend to a musical in the city’s West End would be a great way to cap off her visit.  It was with this in mind that I booked a few cheapie tickets for a Friday night showing of Singin’ in the Rain.

Booking tickets to a theatre production in London is easy as pie and can be done in a few ways.  One can acquire tickets online on websites like Ticketmaster or Last Minute.com, at one of the many booths selling tickets around Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square, or get them at the theatre.  Because I am cheap always like a good deal, I got tickets for 15 GBP each on Last Minute.com.

We had some time to kill before the show on Friday night, so we hung around Piccadilly Circus and engaged in my favourite pastime- picture taking.  Aren’t we (and London of course!) pretty?

Seriously, though, I just adore London at night.  It’s so very brightly lit, so exciting, so alive!

After exhausted ourselves with all the self-photos, we made our way to the Palace Theatre, the location of our musical. I fell in love with the signage: what a fantastic way to illustrate the title!

And then, it was suddenly time to enter the theatre and see the show.

As we only paid 15 quid per ticket, the seats were appallingly far from the stage. They were nose-bleeds and I swear I almost got altitude sickness from being so high up. Our tickets were labelled “restricted view”, which meant that we were unable to see the extreme front edge of the stage. That being said, the actors stayed within view 95% of the time.  For 15 pounds, I’m not complaining!  The seats were had were great value for the money (the most expensive seats were 93 pounds). In the photos below you can see just how far up we were.

And what of the show?  To be honest, it wasn’t really my cup of tea, though the dancing and the singing was very very good and kept me entertained and engaged for the duration of the play.

Are you a theatre fan? What is your favourite show?

Psst! Don’t forget to “like” me on Facebook if you haven’t already! Your support is much appreciated!

  • How fun! We went to go see a production of Oklahoma in Seattle a couple of weeks ago.

  • musical smusical, i love your hair girl. it is growing so fast!!! 🙂

  • I love musicals – like for serious.

My favourite is Guys and Dolls (I saw it with Nathan Lane and Peter Gallagher when I was like 6 and still remember it CLEARLY).

  • Sounds amazing! I am not a huge fan of musicals but do enjoy the drama and overall vibe of theatre. We have been to see The Lion King, Cat on hot tin roof (the Sanaa Lathan version) and The Big life over the last few years. I would love to go more often..
Yes, good seats are pricey and if you wait till the last minute to score cheaper ones, the best shows are usually sold out!
PS: your hair (are those twists?) looks wonderful!

  • I enjoy theatre but never find the time to go which is shame. Kitchener actually has a lot of theatre so I think I will have to do something to change this.
Your post was really fun. London looks so vibrant and fun.

  • "In the Heights" hands down! And, like you, I saw it for the first time in Baltimore for $25 in the "nosebleed" section…best show ever! I´ll be seeing "Stomp" in a few weeks for the same. 🙂

  • Great post! I love going to the theater in London. It's too bad the show wasn't to your liking, but hopefully there will be lots more to come!

  • Never been to a musical or play! I've always wanted to see Rent on broadway when I was a kid. Hopefully one day!

  • Can't say I am into musicals or plays. Give me an a symphony orchestra any day! Just saw one of my favorite opera singers in Berlin. T'was AH.MA.ZING!

i love theatre. my favourite has to be Aida. saw it on broadway in new york and CRIED at the end. bonus that canuck deborah cox was in the lead. so so so good.

  • I saw Les Mis in the West End back in high school, and while I loved it, I really feel like I didn't appreciate it for how special an experience it was. Obviously the only answer is that I need to go back to see another show!

  • I remember when that came out! Never saw it though!

  • Lion King is defo on my list. I wish good seats were cheaper in general though! Thanks for the compliment! Yes, they are twists!

  • Thanks!! London has its ups and downs but overall it's a great city!

  • Jealous that you're seeing Stomp! I might go see it in a few weeks when my mom comes to visit!

  • I saw Rent last summer in NYC and slept through it! Oops!

  • Never ventured out to an opera, will have to check that one off the life list!! And thanks for the compliment!

  • heehee I know!! I'll definitely be sure to show you a good time when you're here, don't worry! Man D. Cox in the lead?! That would have been fantastic!

  • Exactly! I'm not too sure I'd like Les Mis but ppl who have seen it here in London rave about it, so I might have to put it on the list as well!!

“You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.”
She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.

There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never
wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!
