Yes, folks, so being the daring, adventurous traveller that I am, I decided not to heed the apocalyptic weather forecasts for the Philippines and take my big behind there anyway. A friend and I landed in Manila last night, after a long and arduous ordeal that involved lots of rushing, lots of rain, and an over-booked Hong Kong-Manila flight that resulted in us being bumped off of the flight that we booked AND paid for weeks ago (what the heck!??!) and put on a later flight. But, as I am a champion whiner and complainer, I didn’t let that happen without raising a big stink, and, as a reward for my efforts, along with those of my travel companion, we were given some monetary compensation and a one-night’s stay in a swanky hotel once in Manila (moral of the story: bitching pays- literally). Early in the morning, we staggered out of bed, ate the lacklustre (but free) hotel breakfast, and dragged our tired selves onto a bus, hoping to wind up at pier located two hours away. Then, we jumped onto a very quaint, buoyant vessel (read: small, topsy-turvy dinghy boat) and set sail for Sabang beach, a small enclave popular amongst diving enthusiasts located an hour and a half boat ride away.
And now, here we are. My friend went diving this afternoon, and I, being the typical, non-swimming “if you dare push me into the water ima hafta buss a cap in yo ass” black girl, I opted to stay inside the hotel room and get an hour-long, $6 USD full body massage *smile*.
And now, here we are, possibly about to be stranded in what ABC News has affectionately nick-named the “super-typhoon”, located about two days away from here and guaranteed to wreak havoc of epic proportions. Manila, from what I saw last night and this morning, seems to be recovering pretty well from last Sunday’s typhoon, so I’m not too sure just what level of hysteria I should assume. Some of the eye-bulging, hair-ripping variety perhaps? None that involves frowning though, I don’t need the premature wrinkles.
All we can do is watch, wait, and check various weather websites in order to try to chart the storm track.
