Last Saturday morning I went to China, and was back by Saturday evening. I went all the way there and back via the subway/metro/tube. Sound strange? ‘Tis very strange indeed.
HK is linked to mainland China via mostly underground public transport systems, and it only takes about an hour (including transfers) to get from Hong Kong Island to Shenzhen, China. Shenzhen, the ultimate border town, is a shopper’s mecca, with lots of cheap buys to be had. It is home to a number of large super-malls, each one more flea market than sophisticated shopping centre, with hawkers beckoning to you in broken English from stores that are seemingly piled on top of each other.
A few friends and I met at Hung Hom station in Hong Kong and then rode to the border control at Shenzhen.
We changed trains at some point during the journey, and had the luxury of scoring seats in the first-class section of the train. The seats were comfy.
After the border control, we braved the crowds and bargain-hunted at the Lo Wu shopping centre, located a stone’s throw from the immigration counter on the China side. The mall is massive.
We were accosted from every direction, as storekeepers tried to solicit our business. As one of my friends was in the market for some new eyeglasses (VERY cheap in China), we let ourselves get dragged into one of the zillion eyeglass places in the mall.
We had fun trying on glasses of all kinds of crazy colours and styles, and none of us who had entered the store left empty-handed. I purchased one pair of eyeglasses even though I already own three pairs (and usually only wear contact lenses). But at $25 USD per pair, I couldn’t say no! (Rest assured that I did not purchase the glasses pictured below, LOL).
We also made a stop at a tailor, where I put in an order to get three dresses custom-made for the amazing price of $25 USD a dress (including fabric)! I can’t wait to see how they turn out. The dressmaker ships directly to Hong Kong and I should be getting them in about ten days. We also had a lovely lunch at a Chinese restaurant located in the shopping centre.
We topped off the day with an inexpensive massage to soothe our aching muscles after a day of hardcore shopping. By the end of the day, the shopping centre was packed. I had to laugh when I saw how busy this nail shop was in the mall…
All in all, a great day! Shenzhen has great shopping and is easy to get to from Hong Kong, and is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon, particularly at this time.
