Why I don’t think Ubud deserves the hype

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I’ll be honest. I didn’t really like Ubud.

*Gasp*

I was shocked that I didn’t, actually. Everybody, especially since the “Eat, Pray, Love” book and movie, raves about the place. Ubud is where you’re supposedly supposed to “find yourself”. Ubud is the cultural centre of Bali and an art-lovers dream.

From that perspective, I guess me liking Ubud was doomed from the start. Because I hate arts and crafts and museums and observing/analyzing old stuff/artefacts/history. And also because I think I probably found myself way back in 2005 (when I moved to France for a year).

Anyhoo, I had high expectations of Bali, especially after coming off of the sunshine-and-beach induced high that was Lembongan. Lembongan was spectacular (and I still have more stories from there so that you can see just how spectacular it was- never fear!). We took a speed boat from Lembongan back to mainland Bali and then drove 45 minutes to Ubud. We spent 3 days and 2 nights there. I didn’t get seasick!!

So why didn’t I particularly like Ubud? Apart from being disappointed because it had been so hyped up to me and didn’t live up to expectations, there are three reasons:

1) There wasn’t much (for ME) to do there. I’m not an art buff, so the ridiculous amount of quaint galleries there didn’t hold my interest. There was tons of shopping and deals to be had, but I wasn’t in a shopping mood. Plus, I hate souvenirs and trinkets, so I really had no desire to navigate the markets.

2)Wayyyyyy too much human and vehicular traffic. It seemed like everybody and their mama was in Ubud: tourists doing the “Eat Pray Love” thing and locals trying to make a buck off of tourists. American, Australian, and French accents abounded. Liebling eavesdropped on the Germans. Indonesian vendors tried to peddle goods and services like massages, manicures, and marijuana at every corner. Scooters and minivans belched exhaust, while trucks left trails of black smoke in their wake. The constant hum of motors and screech of horns intermingled with the din of pedestrians tourist-ing made the noise level uncomfortable.

3)Run-down infrastructure. I’m all for buildings and neighbourhood retaining their historic past but to me the main throughfares of Ubud looked very worn, which was surprising considering the amount of tourism/foreign investment. I was very dismayed at the state of the sidewalks- they were broken and uneven and every few meters you had to watch your step because sections were missing and, if not careful, you could fall 3 feet down into the gutter. Falling and breaking your leg in Indonesia is not cute.

I don’t mean to be a Negative Nancy, but just stating how I feel, yall. I just wasn’t a fan of Ubud.

But I did do and see some cool stuff while there.

For example, we had the coolest view from our ground-floor hotel room (We had our own terrace! It looked out onto a rice paddy!).

The view of the rice paddy from the pool was also tantalizing. (Feel free to “ooh” and “aah” as you see fit.)

We went to a market and I took pictures of pretty fruit and buzzing atmosphere.

We saw a few impressive buildings that I just had to get my picture taken in front of because I am vain.

We visited a few rice paddies and I marvelled at how green everything was:

We saw a traditional Balinese dance show.

And Liebling took what may be one of my favourite photos of the trip.

Despite these moments of joy and wonderment, Ubud just didn’t gel with me, in large part to my above mentioned reasons. It wasn’t my cup of tea, and that’s okay. What’s one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, right? This isn’t the first time that I wasn’t in love with a place that people rave about (hello, Barcelona and Prague)!

Have any of you been to Ubud? What did you think? And for those of you who haven’t been: Have you ever gone to a place that people rave about, but that you didn’t particularly like?

  • Yes I have been places that people raved about and didn't like them. That's why I try to stay away from places people rave about especially on television or movies. Because of the raving and people, sometimes things lose their uniqueness. I've been some odd places and found them magical, I once drove to Forks, Washington was in utter gasping amazement at it's beauty. But with all the Twilight geeks, I'm thinking Forks is probably looking dusty about now LOL.

  • But I did want to say, those are some beautiful photographs.

  • You are totally allowed to dislike Ubud. I am not in love with Buenos Aires and eveeeerybody loves it. I don't dislike it. I just don't like it. I nothing it.

But it's weird when you get your expectations so built up about something and then you feel a little let down when you're there in real life.

I need to say it again, even though I've said it a million times — I love all your outfits in every picture. You and Andi are my two most favorite stylish travelers!!!

  • I love the pictures, it looks very lush there. But I understand what you mean, I may love it because I'm artsy 🙂 but I'm not much for crowds.

  • I thought the same about Berlin, funnily enough. I just couldn't wait to leave that city but everyone I know love it there. Oh well, we can't all love the same things.
But, your pictures are really nice and the rice fields are stunningly green.

  • I have been to Ubud twice, once in 2003 and once in 2005, and both of the times I really liked it. But maybe that was before it was so much hyped. When I was there, there was not much touristic action going on and I loved to roam the streets, the markets, eat at the wonderful Lotus Cafe and simply gasp at the beauty of the rice paddies…
For me it was one of the best places on Bali… But I guess that after that whole Eat, Pray, Love thing, Ubud did not change for the better 🙂
Love the picture with you in the rice paddie!!

  • I feel the same way about Barcelona! I wanted to love it SO badly (and I went 3 times!) but I just didn't feel it. And now I might just take Ubud off my must-visit list. Your pics are fabulous though 🙂

  • I felt that way about Cuba. It was the first time I had gone someone and wanted the trip to be over. Many things factored into that of course but it was weird seeing as I spent a lot of money to be there over new years.

Second place is Paris. I don't dislike it because everyone loves it, I'm not a go against the grain just because kind of person (I have a friend who is). It's just that there is nothing about the city that speaks to me. I will be returning with my mom next month for a few days so that may change. People rave about places because there is really something there. It just may not resonate with us all which is ok.

Also I am one of those people who LOVE Berlin. I guess it was the quirkiness, and arty vibe of the city.

  • Of course it's ok to not like somewhere. I hate New York. There I said it.

  • @Flaming: Sometimes I think that I'm just trying to go against the grain, but mostly I think that, like all things in life, there are just some places we are just not "into". Forks, Washington state?? Hmm, might have to visit when I'm in Cheney, WA in a month! Glad you liked the pics!

@Mamacita: Funnily enough I LOVE Buenos Aires, but I'm not sure why!? Maybe it was the abundance of cheap and good shopping and dining?! And thanks so much for the compliment! Being put in the same category as Andi is truly an honour! I love your style, too, you are so trendy! I need to branch out more and take more fashion risks!

@Kourt: You being an artist, I think you'd LOVE Bali, even despite the crowds. We barely scratched the surface of the arts scene, but I've heard there's TONS there.

@Rhona: You know what?! I'm not crazy about Berlin either… Shhh… Liebling is going to read this and kill me! People rave about Berlin and now I've been 3 times. While I'll agree that it's a cool place, I'm not too sure why there is all the hoopla… Then again, I guess I haven't spent enough time there to make an educated decision, since when I was there for two weeks at Christmas I was really sick and bed-ridden most of the time.

@Kristina: I think there's definitely something to be said for places that lose "something" when they become over-run by tourists… Everything becomes tourist driven and all the special, quirky things that make a place unique are changed in the interest of profits..

@Stacy: Bali is definitely worth it but I wouldn't spend too much time in Ubud. Barcelona just didn't grab me… I don't know if maybe I wasn't a fan of the party scene(which just seemed lame- groups of 20 year old getting wasted and dancing poorly)?

@Melissa: Where were you in Cuba? I went many many years ago and stayed in a resort in Cayo Coco and was pretty bored- it was beautiful but I just wasn't excited by anything, you know? It's disappointing to have such a big buildup only to have the trip be so anti-climatic. Now, I LUUURRRVE me some Paris… Not sure why I love it though, but I love French culture and the French language. Definitely have a soft spot for the place!

@Deidre: WHATTTTT!!!! You HATE New York?!?!?!?!?! It's not possible!!!! *forehead smack*
lol! To be honest, NYC for me is okayyyy, but I don't have the same love for it like many others do. I think that places are built up in the media and we are essentially "told" what's "cool" and what's "in" and EVVVVVVERYYYYYBODY loves NYC so naturally you should love it too!! But seriously, places that I love are always highly dependent on my experiences while there and the people I met while there… A lot of the time, the actually physical surroundings are inconsequential..

  • Even though you wrote all about how you hate Ubud, I actually want to visit after seeing your post. Your photos of it are too gorgeous to discourage visitors!

Also, you have great taste in clothes. That striped dress is so pretty on you.

  • @Melanie: LOL! Funny how that happens, no? It is indeed a beautiful place, but I had hoped that it would resonate more with me than it actually did. And thank you for complimenting my dress- I actually bought it in a market in Cambodia for $5 USD! I love a good deal… 🙂

  • I loved Ubud, but I am one of those weirdos who does like art and the worn buildings look. We went prior to the EPL film opening, but I felt like I was pre-warned about how busy it would be there. I thought Bali was kinda busy in general. We stayed in a hotel that was not on Monkey Forest Road, and I think that helped a ton. One thing though is that I really didn't like the market experience in Ubud. I actually don't remember too many Americans, but maybe it's because I drown out American accents inadvertently (or on purpose)? 🙂

I guess a place that I don't like and people love is Las Vegas. Totally disappointing and anti-climactic. Maybe if I had gone in my super party, 20's single girl days I would have felt differently. I was definitely ready to leave. 🙂

  • Also I'm sorry to see you don't like NYC very much. If you stop, I will take you around. I think it's better if you can experience it through a local.

  • I love that dress too!! And your pics do inspire me to consider SE Asia, a region I've never been too interested in, (esp. Thailand, a #1 destination for partying college kids. bah humbug 😉 Plus I'm just into Latin countries and Spanish so that is keeping my travel itinerary occupied. But Bali… so green and lush! Out of all the SE Asia spots you've been, what has been your fave?

  • Thanks for sharing all these lovely photos with us. I've never been to Ubud, would love to. It's ok not to like certain places, it's up to individual preference I guess. I totally agree with Rhona, we all can't love the same thing. 🙂

And I love your blog. Very neat. Have a lovely weekend.

  • Great photos! But yea, we're not going to like everywhere we go 🙂

I noticed you posed the same way everytime lol

  • @Terri: I'll be NYC this summer so I will definitely take you up on your offer to show me around.. 🙂 I know what you mean about trying to drown out other Americans/Canadians! Funny about Vegas, I know people love it but I've just never had the inclination to go see it for myself. I don't like gambling and, I don't know, it just seems like it would be "too much" for me. The surrounding desert seems interesting, though.

@OakViolin: Thank you! About Thailand, I think it's the country in SE Asia has the best combination of tourist attractions: for the history buffs, there are tons of palaces and temples and beautiful beaches! I think it may just be my fav destination!

Oh, and I LOVE Latin America as well! The language and the culture is just so fascinating for me!

@Tiq: Thanks so much for dropping by! You're right, it's all about personal preference and we shouldn't be afraid to go against the grain regarding certain destinations!

@liveletlive: Thanks! And yes, the pose does seem to be the same in all the pics… LOL.. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.. 😉

  • I tend to be wary of things other people rave about. I think it's important to go there and form your own opinion, as you did. Wow, some gorgeous photos of those rice paddies and the building with all the lily pads. That's pretty magical.

  • I like the photos of the gorgeous buildings and your hotel rooom (with the pool and view) looked wonderful–and ofcourse the photos of you and your honey–always appreciative. I would say Honolulu, HI was my 'whateva' moment. The first time I went I was only 16yrs old. In my 80's American teenage mind, I thought I would get to see paradise! beautiful people walking about doing the Hula down the street…and in the grocery stores..Ha! wasn't expecting the concrete high rises, traffic and inflated prices. Had fun and there were definitely beautiful parts to the island but …alas, disappointed…Need to visit the Big Island!

  • @Mil: You're right, it is sooo important to form one's own opinion and not be swayed by the status quo.

@Tanya.lamere: I just laughed out loud at your post! Too funny! I have never had a real interest in Hawaii, though I imagine that it must be beautiful. But it's funny how we totally have a different concept of what a place is supposed to be like because of the media… And then we get there and it is totally different from what we envisioned!

  • It looks neat to me. But the thought of breaking my leg there is quite unsettling.

Happy SITS day: enjoyed visiting your blog very much!

  • Was just introduced to your blog through SITS… Happy SITS Day! These photos are great. I haven't read or seen Eat, Pray, Love, so I have no idea about Ubud, but I'm glad you were able to enjoy it in spite of the hype! 🙂

  • I found early on not to go somewhere expecting anything…especially great things.
If you go expecting some place to be fabulous, you will most likely be disappointed. You have set yourself up for disappointment. No place on earth can / could ever stand up to my imagination. That combined with the unexpected bad moments and / or bad timing can really ruin a vacation. No, it is best to go not expecting much; better yet, a terrible time. Doing so, all is a pleasant surprise.
    🙂

  • Oh and ….BTW….I love all your photos.
I have never been to Ubud….but your pictures make me want to visit one day, someday

  • I loved that last phot particularly – something about hands raised in the middle of a field is just the ultimate description of freedom to me 🙂

  • I haven't been to Ubud and I don't feel the need/desire to go there either…I already found myself. 😉 Loved the pics, especially the last one.

    • I think after all the hype my expectations were pretty lofty… 🙂

  • I have spent way too much time in Ubud for a variety of reasons I won’t get into here. I find it to be a crowded, polluted, new-agey nightmare. The “cool” cafes – Clear, Alchemy, Kafe, etc – are full of poseurs and yoga/raw food wankers from around the globe who think they’ve hit the freakin’ jackpot here – charging tourists exorbitant prices for classes that will “change their lives”. While I don’t doubt that some people come here and have a great time, I see a lot of really depressed, messed-up westerners here with unbelievable stories of personal wreckage. Ubud is like a magnet for dysfunction and dysfunctional people all trying to “heal”. God bless them, but I doubt they will find it here in this crazy place! If you’re a self-absorbed narcissist with a million tattoos and piercings, you’ll probably fit in nicely here 🙂 For all the ceremonies and gooey-eye people floating around the many, many personal development workshops here, I find this place to be a spiritually barren wasteland. Just my 2 cents from the inside. 😛

    • Thanks for your observations!! After being to Ubud, I am inclined to agree!

  • Nice article, Oneika. Maybe http://www.jakpost.travel could be a good recommendation for you to find and explore another interesting destinations in Indonesia…

  • There are over the counter treatments or expensive drugs that people get prescriptions for
through the improvement of technology, very wide range
of types of human papilloma virus involved. Using the
right mixture of natural medicine in the heat produced by the fact that
celulite is basically an accumulation of harmful toxins & fats,
etc. Rosacea home treatments can be painful, expensive, and might cause scarring.

  • Interesting! Recently I’ve been thinking of maybe going to Bali after all (I’ve been hesitant due to how touristy it seems to be), but I only heard complaints about Kuta so far.
Well, if we’re playing the blasphemy game, I’m really not a fan of Thailand, for instance! 😉

  • Ubud is very very magical region in Bali. Your opinion, but for me Ubud is just beyond of amazing places to visit!

  • I went off-roading through Ubud on ATVs and had a blast. But then after walking around, I felt like there were just too many scammers around eager to take advantage of tourists. I like the place, but yea its not the greatest.

  • @Flaming: Occasionally I do believe of which I’m just wanting to go against the particular feed, however mostly I do believe of which, such as things throughout life, you will find some spots we have been just not “into”. Forks, Buenos aires point out?? Hmm, might have to go to as soon as I’m throughout Cheney, CALIFORNIA in a very 30 days! Pleased anyone loved the particular pics!

@Mamacita: Interestingly plenty of I REALLY LIKE Buenos Aires, however I’m undecided exactly why!? Perhaps it absolutely was the particular plethora connected with low-cost and excellent purchasing and dining?! And also thanks a whole lot for your accompany! Currently being put in exactly the same class while Andi is really a complete! I really like look, too, you are and so trendy! I must department out and about additional and acquire additional manner pitfalls!

@Kourt: Anyone becoming an artist, I do believe you would LOVE Bali, perhaps inspite of the throngs. Many of us rarely scratched the surface of the disciplines scene, however We have read there is certainly LOADS at this time there.

@Rhona: Guess what happens?! I’m not crazy about Berlin either… Shhh… Liebling is going to understand that and eliminate us! Persons rave in relation to Berlin and from now on I’ve been three times. Though I’m going to recognize it is a very good spot, I’m not too guaranteed exactly why there’s each of the hoopla… However ,, Perhaps My spouse and i haven’t spent time at this time there to make an informed decision, because after i seemed to be at this time there for 2 several weeks from The holiday season My spouse and i got sick and tired and bed-ridden usually.

@Kristina: I do believe there is certainly certainly something to be stated with regard to spots of which lose “something” whenever they turn into over-run through tourists… Anything gets to be vacationer pushed and each of the exclusive, quirky stuffs that make a spot exclusive tend to be changed within the curiosity connected with income..

@Stacy: Bali is obviously more than worth it however My spouse and i wouldn’t expend too much time throughout Ubud. Barcelona just decided not to seize me… My spouse and i do not know in the event possibly My spouse and i was not a lover of the gathering scene(which just seemed lame- categories of 20 year outdated obtaining lost and dancing poorly)?

@Melissa: Where by have been anyone throughout Cuba? My spouse and i went several a long time back and remained in a very resort throughout Cayo Coco and seemed to be fairly bored- it absolutely was gorgeous however I just was not thrilled through everything, you understand? It truly is disappointing to obtain a real big escalation only to achieve the vacation end up being and so anti-climatic. At this point, My spouse and i LUUURRRVE us a few Paris… Undecided exactly why I really like the idea although, however I really like France lifestyle along with the France dialect. Absolutely employ a delicate spot for your spot!

@Deidre: WHATTTTT!!!! Anyone DETEST Big apple?!?!?!?!?! It may not be feasible!!!! *forehead smack*
lol! To be honest, NEW YORK CITY to me is actually okayyyy, however My spouse and i don’t have exactly the same adore because of it such as many others accomplish. I do believe of which spots are meant upward within the advertising and we have been fundamentally “told” what is actually “cool” and what is actually “in” and EVVVVVVERYYYYYBODY loves NEW YORK CITY and so obviously you should find it irresistible too!! Yet critically, spots that we adore tend to be always hugely depending on the activities while at this time there along with the individuals My spouse and i fulfilled while there… Most of the occasion, the particular in fact actual physical environment tend to be of no concern..

  • Hi – I stumbled upon your website recently. I visited Ubud in 2007. Well, I fell in love with it, but that’s because arts and culture make me feel alive, and I loved the hospitality of the people. But to each his/her own, and it’s great we all have our pockets of the world where we can feel wonderful.

  • Hi Oneika,
I’m an Indonesian living in New Zealand. We have a house in Ubud, so practically we always come back there every two years. I’m not originally Balinese and don’t consider Ubud is my home, although my husband incredibly feels different way. He feels Ubud is his resting place, heaven. Well, that changes a bit when we went back there in 2013. By joe, tourists were everywhere. The roads were jammed with cars, motorbikes, and people, you have to nudge someone to get through walking on the pathwalks! I was totally shocked by how Ubud has changed over the years, from a sacred and peaceful little village into a big commercial tourist destination that television or media have raved about. I haven’t read or watch Eat Pray Love myself, but it certainly made an outrageous impact on the solitary Ubud. Back in the 1990, when the first time I visited Ubud, it was totally much more quieter than it is now. There were more motorbikes and bikes than cars, although there were tourists. What I love about Ubud is the food. Many restaurants I can go to. However, I personally think that Borneo or Sulawesi islands, or even Flores island are the options to go before others found them. There are a lot more cool places to go to and more oceanic activities I can do, such as diving. Hope you’ll be exploring more of Indonesia than just Bali. There are hidden gems somewhere that awaits to be found. Cheers. -Arfi

    • Thank you so much for your perspective!! It’s a shame how the masses have descended on the place and caused it to change for the worse!

  • Where to begin? Negative Nancy…….
Firstly I have just been in Ubud, I’d never heard about ‘Eat Pray Love’ and its connection with Ubud until just now, so firstly id suggest that maybe people just come here because they want to go to Bali, but have no interest in spending time with drunken aussies etc in the beach areas.

This article is ridiculous, firstly you say you dont like Ubud as if that is the most controversial comment ever (you should get out more) & that you were shocked you didnt like it. Then you proceed to explain the defining charateristics of Ubud and how, in-fact, you how you hate that sort of thing.

Are you ok? Seriously? That is the most bizarre comment ever. It’s like saying “I am shocked, I went to a cheese festival and hated it even though this cheese festival is famous” then in the next sentence saying “mind you, i hate cheese and always have done so its actually no surprise”

    Right, ok then. Oddball.

You seem to love/hate, have high expectations/great hopes – you seem so childlike and niave, like the most basic setback will leave you in tears for weeks. Just go, experience, dont judge, dont have huge expectations (disappointment is the difference between expectation and actual experience – folk like you are the worst travel partners because of the infantile attitudes you have towards places – HATE barcelona, HATE Prague – i dont think i could hate anyone/ place – stop getting so worked up kid)and you might enjoy yourself. Might.

Still why were you disappointed in Ubud when all the hype is about stuff you dont like?
    Strange person.
Re Ubud and it’s arts trinkets handicrafts etc i am sure i dislike them more than you do – they are ubiqitious in asia generally – i cant believe that is your primary reason for disliking it. Tell me, what do you usually expect to be in the buildings in tourist resorts Nancy? on your logic i should have hated 90% of the places i have visited in Asia. Get over it Nancy you strange woman.

Too many english AMERICAN french etc accents. Shock horror! it’s a surprise as you hardly ever come across tourists from there usually do you? shock horror number 2 – locals trying to sell things to you as you walk…….tell me, where do you usually go on holiday? Remote Siberia? The Moon? locals on scooters and trucks on roads designed for a previous era? really, No!!!! Dont leave your house Negative Nance you will be crying in India and Cambodia.

    run down infratructure?
Go on holiday and spend it in a Singapore Shopping Mall – no hawkers and 1st class infrastructure.

you must be a nightmare travel companion and hard work to be around generally.

    awkward character.

    • Wow…

You seem to have a horrible time dealing with the fact that people have different, subjective opinions on things/places lmao. Just the pure level of butthurt in your comment is astounding and showcases your immaturity spectacularly lol. Your temper tantrum really makes me want to preemptively hate anything you happen to love, you ill-tempered brat.

  • I wasn’t a fan of Ubud either. I was painfully bored too. My best day was when I hired a guy on a moped to take me around the neighbouring villages – that was nice. It looks like there is only so much you can do because I literally have the same photos as you. From the rice paddy room view, to the same cast at that dance show and right down the the exact same woman selling fruit in the market ??… although after letting me take a photo, she subsequently tried to charge me for it ??. I went in 2013.
