Busy busy…some updates

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I haven’t been very present on the blogosphere lately and with good reason:

a) I was on vacay with Liebling sipping fruity drinks beachside in Paradise (aka Bali)and

b) I got back to Hong Kong and reality (aka work) promptly struck me in the face (and boy, did it hurt). Actually, bulldozed me is probably more accurate. Let us not also forget

c)Liebling was also in Hong Kong with me all of last week, which meant that my evenings were spent eating out and living it up and being all lovey-dovey with my honey bunny (aww).

If that wasn’t enough, last Friday evening, we boarded a plane to Singapore, where we spent the next three days checking out the city with a group of friends. I only got back last night. So my last three weeks have consisted of life, love, and travel, which has not boded well when it comes to the updatage of this blog. So what else is new with me? Read along…

-My tan is awesome. And noticeable. A friend from work greeted with “Oh my god! You’re so black!” my first day back from vacay. A student was incredulous at my tan lines today- she didn’t realize that darkies like me could get even darker (educating people every day, folks). My skin is a deep, even mahogany colour. I hope it lasts!

-My wicked tan has also been accompanied by some of the skin peeling on the top of my arms (does that mean that I burned?!? Never had that before) and a healthy serving of heat rash which means that I can’t stop myself from scratching random parts of myself in public. It’s become a reflex. Eww.

-Speaking of scratching, I realize that I strangely love getting and scratching mosquito bites. At one point during my trip I realized that I had 14 of them. At the same time. Scratching, nasty as it seems, felt absolutely DELICIOUS. Any other freaks out there like me?

-Planning for my impending departure from Hong Kong has kicked into gear. I bought my plane ticket (leaving for good mid-June!) and have overworked my credit card by registering for my summer classes for my Master’s degree (I’ll be in the States for a month taking a few classes in order to finish up my Master’s). I recently signed up to live in a dorm (shoot me) for the month I’ll studying. I haven’t lived in a residence hall since my school days in France way back in 2003. Communal bathrooms and cafeteria food every day?? Not really looking forward to it.

-I am knee-deep in papers to grade… Sigh… And the students are getting restless and unruly… Spring fever is a mutha.

-The weather has gone from coldish to nasty humid hot overnight. Waking up sweating is now the norm. Malls and public buildings are more over-airconditioned than ever, and walking around in 30+ degree Celcius weather with sweater in hand (for the over-airconditioned buildings, of course) is standard.

-Saw my first roach in my apartment (in my apartment!!!!) this morning and nearly had a heart attack ( I am deathly afraid of roaches). It was belly up and right next to the front door, so I’m assuming it crawled in (I live on the 1st floor). I grabbed my bug spray and sprayed the beejeezus out of it just in case. Then I took a shoe and nudged it out into the hallway outside of my apartment. No way I was gonna pick that thing up! It was gone when I got home today; I’m thinking my neighbour must have seen it and put it in the trash. Disgusting!

-Promptly proceeded to see another roach at work. Must be the nasty humid hot weather… Get me outta here. There are tons more roaches outside and they probably jockeying for positions inside in the over-airconditioned (dis)comfort.

-Remember those bangs I cut for myself? Well, they were mighty short-lived. Bangs + intense heat and humidity + resulting pimply forehead = bang fail. Regret is a terrible thing… Thank goodness for hairpins.

-Left my dearest Liebling in Singapore yesterday afternoon, where he flew to Kuala Lumpur and then onward to London-town. I would have cried, but I had to say goodbye to him in front of my friends, and because I’m a G like that I didn’t want to embarrass myself by getting all emotional. But I was crying on in the inside. He’s the ying to my yang, yall! I miss him already, and am dreading the super long separation this time- I won’t see him until he comes to Canada to visit me in August (that’s 3.5 months, people). Le Sigh!

-I have basically been on internet hiatus (due to all of the above) for the last three weeks and haven’t been able to read your blogs (something I thoroughly enjoy doing, by the way)! I have missed your updates and am trying to play catch up, as it’s just like catching up with an old friend. Can’t wait to find out what’s been going on with all of you!

That’s all from me for now. I still have more stories and pics from Bali (and now Singapore) to come!
