7 things you probably shouldn’t know about me

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

This post is inspired by the lovely Tanya over at Tanya in Transition who was kind enough to give me a “Stylish Blogger” award. I am honoured!!

While Tanya shared 7 of her favourite childhood memories, I thought that I would put a remix on the whole affair and share 7 of the weird things that make me the quirky young lass that I am.

Everybody has some peculiarites, some little odd tidbits about themselves that make them singular and unique, no? I am no exception. So without any ado, here are the 7 weird things about me that you probably shouldn’t know:

1. I bite my nails excessively. Like really excessively. Like down to the very nub so that the big, fleshy part of the top of my fingers is all exposed. It’s embarrassing… But I can’t seem to get enough. I guess I really like the taste of keratin

2. I used to be double-jointed. Up until the age of 12, I could clasp my hands front of me and move them all the way to the back without unclasping my hands. True story. Since I never thought to film this freak of nature, here’s what I used to be able to do before atrophy and age set in (courtesy of youtube):

3. I have weird phobias. I’m afraid/made uncomfortable by the strangest things. For example, I can’t bear to put my hand in a bag of cotton balls. There’s something about them that just feels sooooo strange and gross and makes me cringe every time. Also cringe-worthy for me: balloons. I can’t touch them or blow them up for fear that they will pop on me. I also get nervous when people start snapping/flicking elastic bands (they sting on contact and I fear for my eyes). I also tickle-phobic. Tickling makes me want to cry.

4. I used to eat talcum powder when I was a kid. Yes. Talcum powder. Something about the smooth, chalky, crunchy, saltiness of it made me used to take my mom’s Johnson & Johnson’s talc, sprinkle a bit into my hand, and lick until I was in powdery heaven.

5. I have strange fetishes and addictions. I have a strange affinity for mascots. Whenever I see one I want to give it a big, fat hug. I am addicted to foot massages and roasted almonds. Weird combo, but that’s just the way I get down.

6. I don’t open my mail and despise paperwork. Administrative tasks that involve long customer service lines or long waits on the phone can reduce me to tears. I hate going to the bank and having to talk to someone at the counter. I am frustrated by the paperwork involved in getting a new passport or moving to a new country. I have had a problem with slow internet in my apartment for the last two months but cannot bear to call my internet service provider’s hotline or go into their store for help. I pay more than I owe on my bills so that they wont send me another bill envelope in the mail that will go unopened. I try and do all these administrative tasks online as much as possible.

7. I suffer from severe motion sickness but never upchuck. In the last five years I can’t even get on a moving bus without feeling some variant of nauseousness. I carry a plastic bag in my purse just in case I need to hurl but it never happens. I can’t turn in circle or bend down to tie my shoe without feeling a bit sick to my stomach. I have to sit facing the direction the train or bus is going and can’t turn my head to talk to anyone without feeling yucky.

Wow, looking at this list I’m thinking that I may need some therapy. Dang. But I can’t be alone in my weirdness. What are some of the quirks that make you, you?!? Come on now, I’ve showed you all my “crazy”. Time for you to share!

  • I'm totally with you on #3 and #6.

I HATE tickling and start screaming irrationally when someone does it to me. If they don't stop, I have trouble breathing and survival instinct kicks in (ie. i start hitting, pinching, kicking to make it stop)

Re: admin and not opening mail…yup, that's me and living in France doesn't help! Max handles all the admin stuff and telephoning to the companies. I hate checking the mailbox in fear of what I'll find and going to the préf, DMV, impots office makes me shake.

  • OMG. You are one weird chick. I was tempted not to click on the youtube thing and no I wish I hadn't.
With all your wackadoo qualities — I say that with love — how do you travel all over the place?

Anyway, thanks for sharing. While I did have my face all scrunched up I did laugh too.

  • I used to eat talcum powder as a child too! It's apparently a disorder called Pica – wiki it.

Assuming you don't still do this, as I don't, we're just fine as we grew out of it….weird, but fine.

  • Not into tickling either. My husband doesn't understand it at all! Getting a bit phobic about the mail, too. Hey, we've all got our quirks!

  • Wow, thanks for sharing! For some reason, I *love* TMI 🙂

Ditto for #7. I get so motion-sick. People never understand why I have to sit facing forward, but it's a must. Even so…

Good on you for still managing to travel as much as you do. I try to do the same.

  • hahaha. I used to crawl into the fireplace and eat coal..! what? true! I also used to lick sticks of butter (hiding from my mom).

As for phobias? I am scared of far too many things.. and I am seriously thinking I need a BIG change in order to break myself of the habit of fearing everything.
Like maybe moving to a new city. Which terrifies me..

  • Yep, I really relate to a lot of those "weird" things so don't feel too bad about it! We all have our quirks.

My biggest one is that I'm a total germaphobe. I can NOT touch money. It makes me want to vomit. Sometimes Seba will go to hand me change from something and I'll just drop it on the floor because I don't want to touch it.

  • I don't know why–but I thought I was already following you! Anywho, i hope you were able to check out your interview we posted! Double jointed people used to amaze me! But it was weird and kind of creepy at the same time! Lol at not being able to put your hand in a bag of cotton balls

  • Yeah this was a fun share! You have me thinking about the weird things I do too…

  • I bite my nails also so I must wear nail tips at all times. I hum to myself a lot if that counts as a quirk.

  • @Crystal: Tickling is AWFUL! I've definitely also gone feral and starting kicking and punching anyone who dares to tickle me… Hehe, just saw your 7 things on your blog- it's crazy because my dad was also the same way. Hereditary??

@Tanya: I know, right?! I need to be locked up, but then again, it takes all types to make a world- even us weirdos… I like to share my peculiarities with the folks abroad (and soon will bring my weirdness to a town near you 😉 so watch out)! lol

@Melissa: I just did! Crazy! At least now I can put a name to this bizarre past-time… People eating paper though?!! Really? Dang! And luckily I don't do it any more… I prefer fine cuisine… Like McDonalds. LOL

@Mil: Indeed!! Thanks for sharing!! Tickling is one of those phobias that I think a lot of people share. Could it be the loss of control (since tickling produces an involuntary reaction) that we don't like?

@parisimperfect: Well, dear, after your post about the furry boots in the gym I knew that I had to try to compete- your post had me ROLLING, just because it is something that I TOTALLY would do myself!! As for the motion sickness, OMG, I'm so glad you understand! It really sucks and I have been looking into some natural remedies because I am allergic to Gravol. I heard that ginger pills/extract works? Have you ever taken medication for it?

@Gia: My fellow Pica sufferer! Good to know that we aren't alone in our weird childhood addictions. Coal, though! Yowzers! As for being city-phobic, where do you live now?

@Mamacita: Oh wow, I TOTALLY forgot to mention that I am a germaphobe, too! Probably because it is so ingrained into me that I don't really remember that it's strange. I can't STAND bathrooms with mold in between the tiles, HATE using the shower after somebody else, hate seeing people sneeze in public for fear that the water droplets from their mouths and nose will somehow attack me. I hate being around people with colds and don't like touching young children because I don't know where their hands have been (actually, I DO know: mostly in their hands and mouths). Eww!

@Jet-Setting Divas: Yes, I did and THANK YOU!! As for the double-jointed-ness, I used to use it to creep people out for a long time… muahahahaha

@Xtine: Definitely! You know the deal.. 😉

@Opal: I'll be waiting for your post about your quirks, then… 😉

@Faith: LOL at the humming! My grandma used to do it. I don't hum myself but LOVE when people do it… It's so soothing…
