Back.

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Europe two days ago. Canada this weekend. Hong next Wednesday. Three continents in one week + 10 countries in the past 6 weeks = crazy stupid fatigue and jet lag. At least I’m clocking a ridiculous amount of air miles!

I’m back on Canadian soil, folks.
This also my 100th post.

So in the spirit of itemizing (since that seems to be the theme of this post) here’s the run-down of my summer of sun, sand, sea (and rain- mostly in Eastern Europe and the Uk, with lots soon to come in HK as it is typhoon season right now).

So in the past 6 weeks I’ve been to:

2 Continents: Europe and North America.
AND

11 Countries: Canada, France/Monaco, Germany (in transit), Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland (in transit), Ireland, Scotland/UK.

I spent approximately 31 hours on planes during these 6 weeks and about 35-40 hours on trains and buses.

I vacationed in 4 different time zones.

My favourite city was: Nice, in France, hands down. Amazing colours, great weather, great food, beautiful surrounding, and great culture.

My least favourite city was: Dublin, in Ireland. Gross food. Astronomical prices. Horrible weather and boring tourist sites…lacklustre.

Most pleasant surprise: Krakow, Poland and Budapest, Hungary. I really enjoyed both cities and my stays there. I had had pre-conceived notions about them primarily because of their location in Eastern Europe, but they were amazing and I met nice people there.

Most touristy, overrated city: Prague, Czech Republic. Don’t get me wrong, Prague is a beautiful city, but there are tons of beautiful cities in Europe. I just found it to be over-hyped and over-ran by droves of young anglophone tourists looking to get wasted and have lots of nasty, unprotected sex with strangers, much like in Barcelona.

Most expensive city: A tie between Dublin and Vienna, Austria. Vienna was pretty, modern, and well-manicured so it came as no surprise that life there would come with such a heavy price tag. But expensive Dublin?!? Really? I can’t figure it out.

City with the best looking men (because this is a VERY important consideration, haha): Vienna, Austria. Everyone was tall, fairly blond, with great facial features. Mmmm. I looked like the girl from the Exorcist, my head spun around my neck so much! haha.

Best overall experience: Nice, France. Geez. I don’t know if it’s because I spent a month there studying (and lived there for a year in 2005), because I already have a soft spot for France, or if it was due to superficial things like the amazing weather, location, or food, but I enjoyed myself royally, and would have to say that it’s the best place I have ever lived. Maybe I should move back to France in 2011?? Sigh.

And now for something completely different: ASIA on Wednesday! I have NO idea what to expect.

  • I am exhausted and exhilirated reading about it all. 🙂 Dublin does need to work on the prices, for sure. I thought Irish men were hot, too, but man, will they talk your ear off. Your Austrian guys seem to have the look of Dutch men. Can't wait to see what you have to say about the HK prices. Eck!

  • Salut, Nikita — and great blog!

I also am a HUGE fan of Nice and didn't know you lived there for a year!! I've been there twice in the past several months and felt completely at home there… perhaps that's trying to tell me something?? (Of course, the Cote D'Azur is one of the most fab places on earth, so I'm sure it speaks to loads of people.) Perhaps we can chat via e-mail about it some time — and I'll be sure to read all your back posts that talk about my newest favorite city!
