Cambodia and Geckos

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

As you can see from above, I had lovely accomodation while I was in Cambodia. The hotels rooms I had in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap were large, airy, and spacious- such a switch from the cramped housing in Hong Kong! However, I soon realized that I had a number of roommates who came to keep me company in my cavernous space:

Geckos! Now, I’ve seen geckos before, as they are quite common in Hong Kong, and think that they are actually kind of cute. But NOT in my hotel room. It’s not so much that I’m afraid of them as I don’t want them scampering over my face while I sleep. And the, ummm, excrement that they leave behind is kinda gross as well. Think bird dookie.

What I also didn’t realize is that geckos can be super loud. The little guy pictured above? Found him in my hotel room in Phnom Penh and he screamed like a banshee. I couldn’t sleep so I had no choice but to call the hotel maintenance staff, who sprayed the bejeezus out of the poor creature, and left my room smelling of pesticide. I had another gecko in my hotel room in Siem Reap, who would inexplicable shriek at evenly spaced 15 minutes intervals. At 1 am. For three nights in a row. Drove me absolutely crazy, especially since, despite checking all crevices in the room, I couldn’t find him to kill him…. A search and massive spraying of Raid by the hotel staff didn’t yield any results either!
