Did I mention that I am in hot pursuit of a winter coat? I’m leaving to Deutschland in 16 days to spend Xmas in Berlin with Liebling and familia. I’m excited for the tannenbaums and currywurst mit mein Liebe but worried about keeping warm in the brisk German climes. Hong Kong is bizarrely warm for December (high of 26 degrees celcius today and sunny!) and shops don’t usually stock many winter clothes, which is leaving me in a bit of a conundrum since the heaviest jacket that I have with me here is a bolero jean jacket that isn’t very warm at all. I have thus been making the rounds at all the various clothing stores here that have “Western” (read: regular folk) sizes, but my visits to H&M, Esprit, Mango, Zara, and HK department stores Wing-on and Sogo have proved fruitless. Why? Well, because, duh! in hot countries they don’t sell winter coats!
I am looking for a coat of a down variety, past the knee, complete with hood. I have mostly found short coats of a wool/polyester blend, sans hood. I typically would just buy one and get it over with, but the sheer expense (even decent coats start at $100 USD!) of a coat that not EXACTLY what I’m looking for is keeping my credit card firmly wadded in my wallet. Also, being Canadian, I already OWN 8 or 9 different winter coats (still in very good condition)- the problem being, of course, that they are smugly ensconced in the downstairs hallway closet of my Mum’s house in Mississauga, Ontario. Sigh. (edited to add: I already asked my Mom to ship one of them to Hong Kong, but DHL charges $160 USD to ship a package of that size/weight over to HK…NOT an option.)
So the search for a winter coat continues… I still have hope, but somehow, I see lots and lots of layered sweaters in my future.

How about you try online shopping- you can find some great deals on many of the online sites or get mum to ship one of the coats to HK or Germany?
why not ask your folks in canada to ship it to you. You have enough time and it will probably be cheaper than buying a new one, right?
Agreed! Since you are only in Germany for a few weeks, it may not be wise to buy a new coat. If you can get the folks to ship it to you that would be best. You have enough time that you can get it shipped to HK or even Germany. DHL or EMS are cheap and reliable shipping options from Canada to Europe/China.
Btw, how cold does it get in Germany in the winter? Do they get a lot of snow? I can't imagaine their winters being as cold as it is here in Canada. Lucky you- 26C in HK. It was 1C today in Toronto and everyone is grateful to the weather gods that we haven't had any snow yet!
You could have your mom mail one of your coats to Germany.
@ Melissa: unfortunately, I absolutely have to try on the coat before purchasing- my body dimensions are too weird, and I'm picky 🙂
@blackwomenwhitemen and amanda: I probably should have mentioned that I already asked my mom to ship one of my coats and she refused! She can't bother going through the hassle of sending it, plus it would be super expensive (about $160 Canadian- more expensive than buying another coat).
@Samantha: it gets down to the about -5 (colder with windchill) in Berlin. Typically, Berlin doesn't get much snow (although it can snow quite a bit in the north of Germany), but last year they had a ridiculous amount (nothing compared to Canada though). I'm hoping that the snow will skip Berlin while I'm there- I don't have any winter boots either!
