I think I mentioned that the reason that I went to Cambodia in the first place was to supervise a field trip for students as part of their “Adventure Week”. Many international schools in Hong Kong have the high school students, as a requirement of their educational program, take a week-long trip to an international destination (our school ran 14 trips this year, including trips to New Zealand, Paris, Japan, and Sri Lanka). These trips are geared to promote a sense of internationalism and tolerance of different countries and cultures. Many trips also have a “service” component, where students engage in some sort of meaningful participation within the community they are visiting.
Our trip, while mired in historical and cultural activities, also had a community service component. On one day we visited an orphanage in Phnom Penh, where our students had the chance to learn about the horrors of poverty in Cambodia’s capital (the kids in the orphanage once lived in dumpsters). Later in the week, we had the pleasure of visiting a school in Siem Reap, and planting fruit trees with the children of the school in the school’s back yard. It was a humbling experience for many of our well-to-do students, who had the opportunity to interact with kids way less fortunate than they.

wow! 14 trips in one year, that sounds like a travel company. But since it's an International school, I guess didn't students didn't have a problem with funding. I guess this is something similar to the 40hour community service in Ontario high schools. Definitely a good experience for the students.
