Home again!! And eating my way through Toronto while I’m at it.

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I’m home in Toronto, yall!

After an early morning wakeup and drive from Cheney to the Spokane, Washington airport, I flew to Seattle, then flew from Seattle to Toronto.

I am happy to be back in Canadia (yes, I wrote Canadia), where people talk like me (eh!), we use the metric system (gallons and miles are so confusing, give me litres and kilometres any day!) and the money has different colours (Monopoly money rocks!).

I landed at about 8:20pm and made a quick dash through customs. My mom picked me up and I was back in the house I grew up in by 9:30pm. By 10:05pm, I had showered, dressed, and gotten all gussied up to go out to the wedding reception of a friend who had JUST gotten married that day. I didn’t even have time to unpack! No rest for the wicked, you see.

After a couple hours of dancing and catching up with folks at the wedding, my mom came to pick me up and we drove home. I was exhausted! But not too tired to stop by my fav Canadian coffeehouse, Tim Hortons, for some food and drink.

Today, I woke up ready and raring to go. Destination? None other than… the MALL (lol). I spent more money I don’t have (but got the most GORGEOUS leather jacket). But not before I took these pictures of me in the backyard and the front of the house. It was sunny, hot, and gorgeous out!

I am also beginning to eat my way around Toronto. There are tons of foods that I have been longing for since I wasn’t able to find them (or suitable substitutes)in Hong Kong. First stop: Charley’s Steakery in the mall, where I got a chicken philly sandwich and some thick cut fries. I have been dreaming about eating this for a year, yall.

As you can see, I demolished my sandwich. It was good.

Canadia is on and popping. Just a short walk away from the mall, there was whole bunch of activity going on. Apparently, this weekend Ribfest was happening. There were a bunch of people strolling up and down the midway that was set up with circus-y type games and rides, and a whole big section where people were lining up and getting ribs.

Now I smell like barbecue. But I am happy. There’s no place like home!

  • Isn't home the best. No matter where it is, you're always happy to be home. I visit a lot myself and everytime i fly or drive back into Seattle I'm teary eyed b/c I missed home so much. Have fun! I gotta get up to Toronto.

  • Love it! Welcome home and I'll be joining you very soon 🙂

P.S. Were you talking about the Eaton Centre??

  • @Flaming: Home is FABULOUS! So happy to be here. It's funny, because every time I come back I feel like I've never left! I think that's how I know that Toronto is home to me- I can always easily slip back into my routine! You really need to come here in the summertime!

@Crystal: Thank you! We really need to plan this meetup, missy! I was actually talking about Square One as I technically live in Mississauga, lol. I think I'm going to the Eaton Centre either today or on Tuesday. Can't wait! (I'm gonna be so broke…)

  • No place like home indeed! That was funny about you hitting the mall as soon as you woke up. Yes, Toronto is the BEST and no matter where I live, I will always return to my first true love and home, Canadia. 🙂

  • Tim Hortons!!!! I love it and miss it so much (we have it in Michigan too, but not here in D.C.)! There really is no place like home, right?

  • oooooooh Toronto – how I miss thee 🙁

Please enjoy some jamaican home cooking, tim horton's (which you already have!), and a randy's patty 😉 for me.

  • @Rhona: Toronto IS awesome! Now only if it'd stop being so darn hot!

@Tanya: Ummm hell to the yes!!

    @Melissa: I don't blame you!

  • No place like home..it looks amazing plus hot sunny weather!! Lucky you. Right now in London it's been raining nearly everyday- a total washout of a summer (pun intended).
The sandwhich looked delicious and your dress for the wedding is very pretty, the neckline gives a hint of Hawaii.
PS: you look like your Mum!

  • OMG, where did you get that dress? It's amazing. You're amazing. In it. LOVE.

PS. Yay, home sweet home! And shopping!!!

  • @sprite: I heard from my boyfriend that the weather has been AWFUL in London! What a shame! Thanks for the compliment on the dress and on my mom!! Funnily enough, I think that I look more like my dad! LOL

@Mamacita: I got this at a boutique in Hong Kong!! But I think it's an English label. I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it and had to buy it… 🙂

@Aritul: Thanks!! I ran my 10k today and it went great!

  • Timmies! That's definitely in order after a long time away from Canada 🙂

  • @thatbackpacker: So glad to be reunited with my Timmies!
