Shopping in Spokane (Warning: Girly post)

So today, my last day in the wild wild west of Washington State, I finally ventured out of my small village and embarked on a journey to the next big town over, Spokane.

Spokane is apparently the second largest city in Washington state, after Seattle. It is a very beautiful town, as evidenced by the photo below.

But I didn’t come here to talk about all of that today. What I want to talk to you about is shopping. Oh, yes, shopping. Sweet, sweet shopping.

You see, I have a secret. It may actually be not-so-secret actually, but for those of you who don’t know, I’m going to put it out there: I am a bit of a shopaholic.

I love clothes. I love shoes. I love makeup. I love fashion.

I always buy more than I need: stuff on sale, stuff not on sale, a ridiculous amount of lacy bras and an exorbitant supply of black camisole tops. When I moved from Hong Kong a month ago, I was embarrassed by how many clothes and shoes I had. I gave away four big black garbage bags of clothes and shoes, and even brought a suitcase of clothes to school and laid in on the table in the teacher’s lounge so people could rifle through them and take what they wanted. Many of the clothes I gave away had only been worn once or twice and some even still had the price tag.

It’s not my fault. I get the sickness from my momma. My momma is a shopaholic, too. And guess what? My momma looks damn good… all the time. I mean, take a look at how hot and stylish she is:

But I digress. I went to Spokane today. And after being stuck in a village where THERE IS NO MALL(!!!) for a month, I spent a fair bit of time in the shops.

But I made a promise to myself, after majorly downsizing my wardrobe before leaving Hong Kong. I promised myself that I wouldn’t shop as much any more.

To put it simply, I have too many clothes that I never wear. I buy too many things that I don’t love. And I move/travel a lot. Too many clothes makes moving/travelling stressful.

So this (semi)-reformed shopaholic went to the mall and barely bought anything. But just because I couldn’t shop, didn’t mean I couldn’t look, no? I decided to chronicle my window-shopping adventures in pictures. Will you come along with me?

Firstly, here’s the outfit I was working with today:

Here’s the cute little black dress that I found in Loft. Lord knows I don’t need another little black dress, but I just had to try it on with the shoes I DID buy. I am IN LOVE with these shoes! I found them in a store called Black & White and they are so retro! Leather low-heeled slingbacks with a cute white bow for $50 USD?! No way I could leave these in the store. By the way, does anybody shop at these stores? I’ve never heard of them before. We don’t have them in Canada.


Here’s me in Loft again trying on another dress, this time a navy blue and white stretchy shift with a nautical theme. Very cute, but at $70 USD purchasing it was just out of the question. #imnotmadeofmoney

To celebrate our purchases, me and my shopping companion Amy posed by the cash register. Marilyn Monroe, Betty Boop, and Jessica Rabbit, eat your hearts out. Shopping makes us feel sexy.

After Loft and Black & White, I found myself in yet another store I’ve never heard of before, After much arm-twisting from the adorable saleslady (arm-twisting? Pfft, who am I kidding?!) I purchased a black scarf for $10 USD. It was on sale! I lost my old one! I am not justifying my purchases to the internet! (Or am I?)

We also went to Banana Republic. I tried on a dress that I couldn’t afford.


Loved the canary yellow. Didn’t love the $120 USD price tag.

I DID, however, manage to find something that I COULD afford. This dress, originally priced at $74.99, had a 40% mark down and then an additional 20% reduction once scanned at the register. At $36 USD for a Banana Republic dress, it was practically begging to be taken home. Who am I to turn a blind eye to a homeless garment?!? Plus, I think it’s kinda cute.

I went to a couple of other places (including the M.A.C. makeup counter in Nordstroms, where I bought a lipstick) but was too knackered to bother taking pictures of what I tried on. But the day was a success and I left smiling:

Cuz sometimes all you need is a little retail therapy to make the world right again.

    I went shoppingin La Défense yesterday and came home with a few goodies on sale from H&M (my go-to store for wardrobe staples and summer dresses) and Occitane. I also plan on doing some serious shopping with my Momma when I'm back in Canada! (she usually pays, so these shopping trips are my favourite lol).

    I love all the stuff you tried on/bought, but I think the nautical dress was my fav…you might just have to go back and get it 😉

    I used to be like you — I'm barely reformed so I understand — until we moved to France. Instead of my lovely walk in closet in TO I have a little cupboard that I share with D. It's the only closet… Gak, it's not even a closet.

    Anyway, I decided on a plan of action. I only buy something if it meets two criteria: 1) price (of course) and 2) how I feel about said item/how it makes me feel.

    For the above reasons I stay away from stores such as H&M, Zara, L'Occitane, Bath & Body Works (in TO)…

  • hahaha I loved this post! I know EXACTLY what you mean about retail shopping making everything ok again. I also have a scary tendancy to binge-shop (as Hubby puts it) but I am trying to cut down too.

    Girl, you are going to FREAK when you get to London… it is the MECCA of shopping (even worse than Paris I feel)…

  • I love boutiques and I love that picture of Apricot lane. Unfortunately, shopping isn't in my vocab right now and I only step foot in banana republic if there's a sale going on.

  • This makes me want to go shopping again, my favorite shopping mall/district is in Charleston. It also reminds me of going to Arizona Mills a few weeks ago, I went into a Gap outlet and everything was 50% off, my husband did not understand my excitement.

  • Spokane has really changed since my last pass through town. I thought the combined Greyhound/Amtrack station was an impressive feat, but now they've got world-class fashion boutiques?

    Shopping is not for me but friends came to visit me in Paris last year and they wanted to visit LOFT. Strange experience with personal attendants, recommendations, opinions, debates, you can't do anything for yourself, takes forever… I'm guessing that's strictly the European house rules and Spokane's location is a little more down home.

  • Lets not even go there!!! Coming from NYC…u know I'm a recovering shopaholic…sigh!!!I moved with 6 suitcases, gave a way a tonne of clothes, and kept some in storage…and now after 3 years in AMS…..only difference is the price tags have got cheaper, so I guess I am improving somehow 🙂

    Loft is pretty popular in the U.S. I think. I don't shop there by I have a lot of friends that do. I think their vibe is like the whole businessy, but still trendy and cool thing.

    And those shoes are amazing. You're right. They were begging to be taken home.

    @Tanya: Ha! I think that mall avoidance is probably the best strategy- that way I'm not tempted to buy anything! I'm starting to get better though- whenever I start to realize how much stuff I already have I usually go on a no-shopping diet!

    @Fned: LOL! Great minds think alike, eh?!? I am looking forward to discovering shopping in London. Somehow, when I was there last summer I didn't do much shopping!?! I have no idea how that happened. I'm actually on the prowl for a pair of brown, flat riding boots and am thinking I should wait until I get to London to start the search… Oh, the fun I'll have… Also searching for a nice pair of jeans to go with the shoes!! 🙂

    @Udara: Thanks for the kind words! I absolutely love yellow and other bright colours on dark skin. Somebody told me the other day that I tend to wear bright colours and I realized that it's true!

    @Kourt: Men never seem to understand!! Liebling rolls his eyes at my shopping excitement lol. Man, I haven't been to Gap in AGES. They didn't have them in HK!

    @Terri: I vowed today that I wasn't going to do any shopping in NYC! But maybe I'm just kidding myself. Sigh. The funny thing is that my mom encourages, aids and abets my shopping habits!

    @legrandezombie: Spokane doesn't have the most chic boutiques but after being stuck in Cheney for a month, I felt as though I was shopping along the Champs Elysees! LOL. My experience with shopping in France is that the people who work there rarely intervene and act like you're bothering them when you ask them for help or to let you into the changeroom!!

    @Kuesoom: Wha?!!? 6 suitcases, eh!? Makes me not feel so bad 🙂 My real problem is that I buy stuff indiscriminately even if I don't love it… Looking at the picture of that last dress, I'm thinking to myself that I don't know if I even really like it and I definitely didn't need it!! I do stuff like that all the time, but luckily I get stuff fairly cheap so it's not that big of a loss… 🙂

    @Melissa: Um, YES to the travel partner thing!! I'm hoping that when we meet you'll like me enough to want to have me tag along and travel with you… 🙂 I'm obviously gonna have to save my money for London because it looks like I'll be breaking the bank shopping-wise when I get there.. Seems like the fashion will be irresistable!!

    @Mamacita: Totes adorbs, loves it! Will incorporate that one into my vocab!! You hit the nail right on the head with your description of LOFT- my friend Amy, when she told me we were going there was like, "yeah, it's businessy, that's where I buy all my work clothes"… LOL.. I love it and would have bought some work stuff there but all of it was too summery and considering I'm moving to cold London I imagine I wont be wearing singlets and short sleeves to work very often!

  • Aw, look at your cute momma. And you! Always love your photos. I absolutely love yellow on you. I maintain, nobody on this planet can pull off that colour well, but somehow you do.

    I almost bought a dress last week that was uber cute – black base with gorgeous paisley purple pattern, but I don't need it and there's no room in the pack for it.

    It was sooo hard to walk away, so I relate to your struggles. Fashion was, and still is hard for me to give up in this new lifestyle. I know how stupid that sounds btw. 🙂

  • @Nomadic Chick: Yes! Somebody who knows my pain!! I often feel the die-hard, hardcore travellers have an unwritten code that states that if you're a traveller you shouldn't be interested in "frivolous" things like hair and makeup. Wanting to dress up and match your hair to your makeup and clothes is hard to reconcile when you're backpacking long-term and don't really have room in your pack for all the extras! That's why I love seeing people like Andi (of "My Beautiful Adventures")- she ALWAYS looks well put together, even when she's the the jungles of Brazil lol. Anyway, thanks for the love, my dear! I think that yellow can be pulled off by many, though, but it just has the be the right shade!   • OMG you are so funny! That must have been totally fun: shopping with friends, trying on lovely stuff, make-up! yes! shoes-double yes!! I too am a (reforming) shopaholic; some things are just calling my name to take them home;)! Your purchased were great & I thought you were really restrained, but you MUST get that canary yellow dress- absolute perfection on you, makes your skin super glowy and suits your figure to T! PLEASE GET IT. It's pricey yes but when something works that well, it becomes an investment! Just think- you could dress it up or down, wear it as tunic over jeans or leggings, with heels for dinner, etc – you get my drift:). If the quality is as great as it looks- you will really get your moneys worth for a long time.
    Thanks for this post, you just made me laugh & feel a little less guilty about my resolutions occasionally flying out of the window whenever I go shopping for a top and come home with 3! Plus a pair of shoes. And Bobbi Brown gloss!!

    Anyway, that is not the point. The point is that I'm going to need you to buy that navy and white striped dress and send it to me because oh my gosh, I love it.

  • @sprite: You know what, would you believe that I spotted a girl the other day on the street in Toronto with that same yellow dress on!? It looked SOOOOO pretty on her! So now I'm wondering if I should go back and splurge… Maybe I can consider it my birthday gift?!!? LOL. p.s.: I've never tried Bobbi Brown cosmetics! How do you like?

    @Emily: LOL! I'm not too sure about LOFT as they don't have it in Canada! But I'll definitely be on the lookout for it when I go to NYC in a few weeks… 😉

  • You really should get that dress, trust me:)
    Bobbi Brown cosmetics are great and one of the few brands that truly cater to all shades of beauty (as opposed to having a token couple of 'darker shades'.)I use her loose powder, lipgloss, lipstick, mascara and brow definer. A quality, top-notch range.
