So.
After saying that I would never do it, and after laughing at the sheer ridiculousness of my friends here who are already doing it, I got a cleaning lady.
Now, before you tell me how my miniscule 500 square foot flat does not necessitate such a frivolous expenditure, let me convince why it’s probably actually good that I have a cleaning lady now:
Reasons my big butt needs a maid
-she cleans all the scuzzies in the bathtub, cleans behind the toilet bowl, washes dishes and snakes the drain (I seriously have a phobia of soap scum, mildew, and that other unsavoury, wet debris that falls into the sink after you wash dishes)
-I don’t do windows, sweeping and using the dustpan hurts my back, and don’t have good enough hand-eye coordination to mop floors
-She makes the bed, refolds all my clothes (even the underwear), irons, does light grocery shopping, and does all sorts of other minutiae that I have been too tired/lazy to do.
-All the cool kids (i.e. my friends) have a cleaning women, so why shouldn’t I??
I am so full of it, eh?! But, in all seriousness, though I don’t necessary like the idea, I was turned on to getting a cleaning woman because it is a relatively normal thing to do here in Asia, and is very, very cheap. The market for cleaning women here is huge. They are mostly women from the Philippines, here in HK to capitalize on the very free-spending ways of both locals and expats.
My cleaning lady (inherited from 3 of my teacher friends here who use her and attest to her utility and reliability) is named Olive. She is short, with short dark hair. She dresses in baggy jeans and large t-shirts (definitely kind of hip-hop style) and a little “manly”/androgenous looking, which was not really the image I had in my mind’s eye when the thought first came to me to employ a cleaning lady. She speaks great English and calls me “Ma’am” (pronounced more like “Mom” because of her accent), which kind of makes me laugh since she’s probably old enough to be my Mom/Auntie. I gave her a set of my keys so she comes on a designated day and time while I’m not there and does her thing.
But she does a good enough job. She has come 3 times to my flat to clean now, and it is nice to know that I can walk into my spotless flat and not worry about cleaning up or really organizing (most days, I can barely get out of bed lol).
Though, I kind of have to wonder what lasting effects this sort of thing will have on me. Getting used to having things done for you all the time cannot be good. Case in point: in taxis around Hong Kong, the car doors open and shut automatically (the driver has a button of some sort that will open and shut your door on command. I’ve never seen this anywhere else, and found it a little excessive when I first got here. But, didn’t I take my big butt Australia and catch myself standing in front of the taxi door, waiting for it to open?!??! And then, upon exit, leave the door wide open until the irritated taxi driver guy had to ask me to close it?!??!
