While I love expat life and the rush of excitement that comes with navigating a new foreign territory, I sometimes long for the good friendships that I left behind at home. That group of friends who just get you, your stupid jokes, and the random, quirky, and sometimes just downright bizarre facets of your personality.
And thusly, it is always with great pleasure that I receive friends who make the effort to visit. In my time abroad, I’ve had friends come visit me in France, Mexico, and now, in the short time I’ve been in Hong Kong, I’ve already had two visitors!
My flight attendant friend J.D. came to visit me for about 5 days in October. Most recently, my other friend J.H., already in Asia for work/school, popped in to Hong Kong for a couple of days to hang with yours truly. And what a great time! It’s always great to meet up with good friends and talk about things that your nascent relationships with your new friends in your newly adopted home don’t really allow for.
J.H. was here for a little less than 72 hours, which is a short time but I attempted to show her the highlights of what Hong Kong has to offer. I’m hoping that the little taste will have her coming back for more!

Thanks for reading! Basically, I am a certified secondary school teacher (certified in Canada to teach Grades7-12 English Literature and French).
Around the world, there are a number of international schools that are designed to provide an education based on the American/Canadian/British curriculum. There are a number of teacher recruitment fairs that take place all over the world every year, so if you are a certified teacher, and have a thirst to see the world whilst teaching, it's a great option!
That's basically what I did, and that's how I got my jobs in Mexico and in Hong Kong. As for teaching in France, it was part of a language teaching assistant program (whereby I only taught 12 hours a week, and only taught ESL). For that program, I applied through the French Embassy in Canada…
