The 4 pictures that I took whilst in Australia…

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Mmmhh, well, maybe I took more than 4. But really, only less than about 30. Not to say that Australia is not picture-worthy. But, within the framework of my trip (I went for a work conference and not for pleasure) and of course because of the short time-frame I was there (only 5 days!), I didn’t really have the time nor desire to take pictures…

Anyhoo. So I got in Sydney (after a 9hr flight) and was supposed to promptly board another flight to Adelaide (a 2 hr flight south-west of Sydney), which was where my conference was being held. But fate had something else in mind. Due to baggage issues and security issues at the Sydney airport, I missed my connecting flight to Adelaide and was told that I would have to wait another 3 hours to get on another flight. But being the adventurer I am, I decided to ask to get on an even later flight so that I could check out what Sydney had to offer.
Eight hours in Sydney meant I was able to board a train to the city center and check out the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbor Bridge and the surrounding area:

And walk around until I ran into this Aborigine music group who heckled me until I went over to play in their band and snap this photo (no word of a lie, the man to the left of me in the photo cried out “come over here and play, you Black like us!!” LOL):

My trip to Sydney also involved a visit to the mall (of course), where I was excited by the offerings at the clothing stores (yes! finally clothes that my non-Asian body can fit into!! Have you seen these hips and this bottom??) but appalled by the exorbitant prices (Australia is bloody expensive). I also ate at a Burger King (which for some unknown reason is called Hungry Jack’s in Australia). Damn, that whopper was good!

And after walking around a bit and getting the essence of the place, I had to get on a plane and go to my final destination, Adelaide. Adelaide seemed to be a quaint little town and I met a number of people at my conference and ate my way through town (Adelaide has good restaurants with varied cuisine). And then, after three days, it was all over, and I was boarding an overnight flight back to Hong Kong, this time connecting in Melbourne (but with too little time to get out of the airport and see the city).

All in all, I’ll have to reserve judgement about Australia until a later trip (though honestly, I cannot forsee myself going back, at least not on my dime). But travel, in whatever form and for whatever reason, is always good and it was nice to see a new place!
