Mexico: Guadalajara

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

The city of Guadalajara, found in Mexico’s Jalisco state, is often dubbed the “most Mexican city in Mexico”. While I’m not too sure that that assessment is 100% correct, as the diversity of the country and culture makes one hard-pressed to define just what “Mexican-ness” is, Guadalajara is… well… pretty great. I had the opportunity to check out the city briefly during a weekend jaunt way back in 2007.

The thing I liked most about the city was the historical center. Flanked by the massive main square (Plaza de Armas), the city’s largest cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana), and the town hall (Palacio de Gobierno), the historic center gives Guadalajara a really majestic feel.

My friends and I took a sightseeing bus which gave us a bit of a snapshot as to what other interesting things the city had to offer, though my friend was just a tad zonked from all the excitement:

In addition, we also checked out a live mariachi show (as Guadalajara is also known as the mecca of mariachi music).

And what of the native Guadalajarans (known as tapatios)? If the cute waiter we met one day at our outdoor restauarant is any indication, the locals are very friendly!

  • Aw, this was an exceptionally nice post. Taking a few minutes and actual effort to create a superb article… but what can I say… I procrastinate a lot and don’t manage to get anything done.|
