Mexico: Puerta Vallarta

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Many moons ago, my mom and aunt came to visit me in Mexico, and we spent a few days at a beach-side hotel in Puerta Vallarta.

It was December, and even though the beaches of Vallarta are reputed to stay sizzling all year long, it was a tad nippy. I took refuge in head wraps and long scarves for the wind-swept nights along the Pacific Ocean.

The slight chill in the air didn’t diminish the beauty of the beaches, even though I was a tad disappointed that the waters were not the turquoise blue that they usually are at other (warmer) times of the year.

Our days were spent lounging, eating, and basking in each other’s company, as none of us live in the same city. The city was alive during the holiday season, with a variety of free shows and events taking place up and down Vallarta’s malecon (boardwalk).

Puerta Vallarta is also located in Mexico’s Jalisco state, and is actually a 4-hour drive west of Guadalajara. The city, primarily a resort town, is divided into New Puerta Vallarta (P.V. nuevo) and the Old Town (Puerta Vallarta viejo), though I failed to really notice the difference.
