I took a day off work and headed to the airport bright and early one Friday morning to board a plane to Cozumel, one of the literal “hotspots” of Mexico. Getting to Cozumel was actually a means to an end- Playa del Carmen and Tulum were actually the destinations of interest. But the cheapie plane ticket that I found landed at the Cozumel airport (a 45-minute ferry ride from Playa) so I sucked it up and braced myself for a weekend adventure.
I was travelling solo but promptly met a group of French exchange students at the Monterrey airport. They were a relaxed group and we basically had the same itinerary so I decided to hang out with them for the first half of my trip. We landed in Cozumel without incident, and after lounging at a beach close to the airport, we hopped the ferry into Playa del Carmen and danced the night away at a variety of open air nightclubs.
The next morning we parted ways, with me heading two hours south to see the ancient ruins in Tulum, and them heading off to do diving in the neighbouring town of Akumal. With no hostel, nor guidebook, I managed to flag a minibus barrelling down the highway and found myself in Tulum a couple of hours later, no worse for wear. I got dropped off at the main drag and walked myself into a hostel, where I was able to score a bed in a 4-person dorm.
I checked out the ruins within the ancient walled city, and they were nothing short of spectacular, despite being overrun with tourists. The water was a brilliant shade of blue and the sand so white it was blinding. As I was on my own, I struggled to take my own picture. A very nice Mexican family, seeing my dilemma, was kind enough to take me picture, and then afterward asked me to take a picture with them… 🙂
My third day, I headed out to the ruins of Coba (just an hour away by bus) with a few lovely people that I had met at my hostel the night before. Coba was once a major port of Quintana Roo, and is now the site of the large ruined city that once was home to the Mayans. My newfound friends and I navigated the ruins and scaled some of the taller pyramid structures, which gave me a bit of vertigo… 🙂

Love seeing this and my husband and I are headed to PDC at the end of March. We'll be taking the collectivo (the little bus on the highway) down to Tulum and also to Akumal for snorkeling while we're there.
I have to say your blog is excellent and I'm so happy to see another nappy girl out on her own, traveling the world over.
I'm touring Tulum and then through to Belize in just a couple of months and I can't wait! These pics are beautiful!
Wow! I used to live in Playa del Carmen and visited the same spots in Tulum and Coba, how beautiful! These places are not only gorgeous but the cultural heritage is so rich you get easily lost in it, especially in Mexico City!
I wish that I had more time in Mexico City! It’s HUGE and impossible to see in a 3-day weekend! One day I’ll go back… 🙂

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.
