My Biggest Travel Mistake

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

I pride myself on being an astute traveller. I navigate new countries with ease, despite being unwieldy with a map.  I usually find the cheapest flight tickets and can craft an itinerary out of thin air. After travelling to far-flung places I now even know the most difficult airport codes on sight: to wit, DPS (that’s the code for Bali, folks) to GEG ( that’s the airport in Spokane, Washington, where I spent a few weeks last year).  But, alas, I am human. And sometimes I mess up when it comes to travelling. Sometimes I mess up LARGE.

My biggest travel mistake

So what was my biggest travel mistake?  Let’s play a bit of a guessing game:

a) My biggest travel mistake is one I can now laugh at, though at the time it made me cry big, fat tears and left me sleepless for two nights.

b) My biggest travel mistake threw an unexpected wrench in my travel plans and fixing the mistake cost me A LOT of money.

c) My biggest travel mistake was so embarrassing to me that when it happened I didn’t tell anyone but Liebling and didn’t answer phone calls, didn’t respond to messages, and avoided all social media until the situation was rectified.

d) My biggest travel mistake even tops the time I missed my flight to Berlin because of delays on the London Tube.

e) My biggest travel mistake happened last February and involved my trip to Dubai.

Can you guess what happened?

Ahem… well. As it so happens, since January 2nd, 2011, Canadians need an entry visa prior to arrival in the United Arab Emirates.  Oneika did not have an entry visa prior to arrival in the United Arab Emirates. And therefore Oneika was not allowed to board the plane to the United Arab Emirates.

*bangs head against desk*

Oneika went to airport check-in at London Heathrow, had her passport checked, and then was asked the question that will haunt her for the rest of her days: “Excuse me madame, where is your visa?”

The visa dilemma

I remember that Liebling and I looked at each other, incredulous. What visa?!? My Lonely Planet guide never said I needed a tourist visa, and I could have SWORN that I checked online and seen that I indeed DID NOT need a travel document other than my trusty passport to enter.

But apparently I was wrong… so so wrong.  After a bit of back and forth with the women at check-in (who even called a senior manager from another department over so she could be sure, bless her) as to whether or not I needed a tourist visa, it was determined that I did and that I would not be able to board the plane without one. But Liebling? As a German national with a German reisepass, he was free to run off to the UAE with reckless abandon. Which he didn’t of course.  Which meant that instead of just ruining my vacation, I ruined his as well.

IMG_0485

Just to put things into context for you, all this occurred Friday evening.  The UAE consulate in London (where I  would presumably be able to procure this tourist visa) is closed Saturday and Sunday.  MONDAY was the soonest I would be able to talk to someone at the consulate about getting a visa, and there was no guarantee that they would even grant me an emergency/rush visa on the same day.  Our stay is Dubai was only supposed to be a week long, so getting a visa on say, Wednesday and flying out on a Thursday, only to have to return to London two days later was a virtual impossibility.  Our vacay was ruined.

I was gobsmacked at my stupidity and naivety.  Hot tears of shame clouded my vision as we descended into the bowels of the airport so Liebling could retrieve his already checked-in luggage.  I felt sick on the long, long tube ride back to our flat, shaky and desperate.  Liebling, for his part, was deflated, but so lovely about the whole thing- he never cursed my boneheadedness and provided me with hugs and back rubs even though he was gravely disappointed.

A night of agony and a solution

When I got home I got on the internet and called every British, Canadian, and Emirati govermmental office I could find the number for, hoping for a solution… but to no avail.

I spent a night of fitful sleep and woke up at 5am drenched in sour smelling sweat. I couldn’t believe I had messed up so royally.  My body ached from being wound up tight as an elastic band, and I felt depressed and guilty for drawing Liebling into my manic web of travel misfortune.  Regrouping my efforts, I got back onto the computer and frantically began to search for ways to procure an emergency visa.

And then I spotted it: a slight dodgy looking website that promised they could issue an entry visa to Dubai within 36 hours.  It didn’t matter that the website was suspiciously non-descript, that the English was riddled with grammatical errors. It didn’t matter that an emergency rush visa would run me $585  USD (the tourist visa for Canadians only costs $250 USD) and that I was unsure whether it was a scam. I called the number provided, talked to the employee, handed over my credit card number.

And then Liebling and I waited. It was tortuous. But then… 30 hours later on Sunday afternoon, I received an email… with my visa documentation! Within two hours we were at the airport and standing by for another flight to Dubai. We finally got there- two days after our scheduled arrival.

What’s your biggest travel blunder?

  • ‘Tain mais la MOTIVATION !!! Comment tu t’es démenée pour trouver un visa ! See, it’s funny cuz as far as I can remember, even though I’m the most absent-minded person I’ve ever seen I can’t think of big travel blunder I’ve made in the past and that surprises me. Maybe the time when I was meant to fly from Nice to Madrid, and then from Madrid to Mexico: I believed the woman at the desk at the Nice airport when she said I didnt have to check in again in Madrid and found out once I was there that I should ve got another boarding pass before boarding from Barajas. So I was denied boarding and had to wait for about 12 hours in one of the most boring airports on earth. But then again, waitin for a half-day in an airport is just business as usual for you Neikita, that mustn’t sound too devastating for somebody who travels as much as you do!
A very interesting and well-written article as usual.
Keep it irie and criss, nuff luv and respect
    S.

    • lol c’est clair!!! Wow, you had to wait 12 hours?! I had no idea about that travel blunder! Did you have to pay extra? Merci de ton commentaire et d’avoir lu mon article!

  • I am so glad that you are laughing at the situation now. I was too, but of course with sympathy 🙂 So yes, I’ve had two such situations where I ff-ed up with travel. My last travel hurdle was right before flying to Berlin last August. I had excessive luggage and had to drop some serious $$$ to make the flight, because the other option was to throw my things away to minimize the weight. The latter was not an option because while saving money I was flying out of an airport in another state than my own! Uggghhh I haven’t told anyone about this bump, but I guess now the cat is out of the bag. Needless to say a lesson has been learned big time. But you can’t blame me I had to pack for half a year 😉 Glad you had a chance to travel anyways – the pics are lovely !

    • LOL! Overpacking will get you every time!!! I wish airports could store stuff like that for you so that you could pick it up on your way back home!

  • Oh no – that sounds so painful! Good on you for making it in the end!!
When I was flying to Australia, I was using a visa that I obtained over the internet – thus no stamp in my passport, just an email in my inbox. They didn’t ask me about it in my hometown of Toronto, but when I got to the second stop, Vancouver, they weren’t about to let me on the plane until I produced some proof. Thank goodness I’d printed a copy and stuck it somewhere in my bag! I could have so easily gapped that and been left stranded on the other side of Canada. Bah!
Coming to Cambodia, there was almost a problem with the airline employees not wanting to let me on the plane, and they didn’t seem to believe me that you could just get a visa at the airport here in Phnom Penh. Literally, though, the lady didn’t know where Phnom Penh actually was (she guessed Thailand!), so we were able to convince them that we knew what was going on. *Sigh of relief*

    • I’ve gotten that Australia visa before! I don’t know about you, but I found it strange that as a Canadian (and thus a member of the Commonwealth, just like OZ) that I would need a visa to go there?!

  • Oh wow! That was quite an adventure! Glad you still got to enjoy your trip though.

My biggest trip mistake was when my sister and I visited London a few years ago. We flew in from 2 different cities in the US and were flying back to our respective cities. Our flights left an hour apart and my sister who I love so much insisted that we go see the church where Princess Diana married Prince Charles. I knew we were cutting it close but I quieted that inner voice of mine.

Sure enough, I got to the airport 50-minutes before my flight and was refused entry on the flight because I had to be checked in at least an hour before for an international flight. My sister was able to make her flight but I wasn’t. Unfortunately, that was the last flight out of Heathrow to my airport and my car was parked at my airport. So I had to pay the airline for a transfer ticket to another airport which was a good 90-minutes from my local airport, call a friend in the states cause my phone decided to die at that point, and BEG her to come get me from the other airport and drive me to my local airport. It was NOT a fun return trip and I promised myself I’d never be late for an international flight again!

  • Oh gosh, half the time I forget about visas – I think because there are so many places we Canadians can travel without them or get them on arrival!

I haven’t had anything too terrible but my top 2 are:
{1} After a trip to LA, my husband and I were in the cab on our way to the airport when I pulled out our flight documents to make sure everything was in order when I realized we were exactly 1 day late for our flight. Whoops.
{2} We checked out of a hotel in Singapore but left our bags as we had some more exploring to do. When we arrived later that day to pick them up they asked us to wait as they had something for us. Perplexed, we hung around when they presented us with our passports. We had left them in the safe. Good thing the hotel decided to check for us!

    • Exactly! I really take for granted the fact I don’t need a visa in most places. This is compounded by the fact that Liebling, as a German national, almost NEVER needs a visa to go anywhere, even when I do! Really nice of the hotel in Singapore!

  • I would have never thought you needed such a thing! I’m so happy this story had a happy ending, you had me nervous with the dodgy site description!!

  • You’ve mentioned the visa snafu before , but I was tense while reading it because of your suspenseful description. Glad you can laugh about it now.

I’m new to traveling, but my one travel blunder is when I missed my flight from Buffalo to New York City and had to take one of the dreadful china buses (i don’t know if you’ve heard of them, accident prone to say the least) leaving at 12 midnight and arrived 9 hours later in NYC. To make matters worse, my phone was dead so I couldn’t reach anyone.

  • Oh boy, just got back from Dubai last week, but I luckily had a visa in tow, but still was shocked to find out Canadians needed one.

Another good reason for Canadians abroad and travelling to pay closer attention to the the impact of Canadian foreign policies and our international relationships. UAE and Canada are not playing nicely right now… mostly due to airline landing rights!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada%E2%80%93United_Arab_Emirates_aviation_dispute

    • I read up a bunch on the aviation dispute after the fact and boy did it make me angry! As a Canadian I just assume that for more places I don’t need a visa (and usually for the UAE don’t- this is just a super-extenuating circumstance). Le sigh!

  • I remember this story! I don’t think I’ve ever done anything like that, but i also haven’t travelled as far and wide as you have.

I did pay about 3000 more dollars for a visa in aus than I needed to because my lawyer confused the hell out of me. I was pretty horrified and upset by that.

    • Ugh! That’s so upsetting as you would expect your lawyer to anticipate your confusion and be really clear! Bah.

  • Yikes! What a thing to forget to check to get!

Our biggest and costliest travel mistake to date has been my husband forgetting the $1,500 worth of Brit Rail passes at home, and remembering it just after we had passed through security at Pearson for our flight to the UK for our honeymoon.

Purchasing rail tickets cost us even more.

    • Oh my!! It wasn’t possible to go home to get them?! Would missing the flight have cost you more money?! Argh!

  • Oh God…this sounds like a total nightmare. When I landed in the Istanbul airport recently, my heart seriously leapt into my throat upon seeing a million and one signs that you need a visa to enter, when I hadn’t organised anything – but thankfully you can just buy it right there!

My biggest travel mistake happened on the Trans-Siberian just a month ago – soon to be written up while the trauma is so fresh in my mind, ha! 😉

    • I knew about the visitors visa to Turkey, but it still ticked me off that I had to pay 60 USD while Liebling paid nothing! Grr!

    • It’s terrible that we take it for granted that we can go everywhere! It was such a huge shock that although I know it was a fluke and probably wouldn’t happen again, I check 50 gazillion times whether I need a visa to go places now.

  • I am extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog.
Is this a paid theme or did you customize
it yourself? Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it is rare to
see a great blog like this one nowadays.

  • How many days were you in Dubai? I’ll be in india for business for 10 weeks early next year and I’m looking to spend a 3 day easter weekend in Dubai and if possible also do a day trip with Khasad Tours to Oman.

  • Note to Self: Check online for Canadian Visa requirements for all future trips! Thanks, Oneika!

  • Missed a train to Venice Italy, hence missed a tour in Venice Italy – Changed it to a wine tour in Venice Italy, so naturally we missed the last train out of Venice Italy! I can laugh now. But trust and believe, no one was laughing at the time. I’m actually breaking the rules because we agreed to NEVER discuss that day again.

  • OH and I just bought a ticket to Dubai! 🙂 WOOT!!!

  • I read that Visa’s are no longer require for UAE/Dubai now…

“A valid Canadian passport is required for Canadians intending to visit the United Arab Emirates. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry into the country.
As of June 1st, 2013, Canadians with a regular Canadian passport no longer need to obtain a visa prior to their arrival to the UAE. An entry stamp will be given at the airport, free of charge, and valid for 30 days. For more details please refer to the Travel Report and the UAE Embassy’s website.”

I certainly hope that’s true because I’m heading there for a short stay in a few months. Fingers Crossed
