If you’ve been following my updates on Facebook, you’ll know that Liebling and I are in New York City for the holidays. And if my exclamation point-filled status updates are any indication, the fact that I’m in the Big Apple has me absolutely thrilled.
This probably comes as no surprise since my love affair with mega cities is well-documented. I went absolutely gaga for Tokyo, still long for Mexico City and Paris, and loved my first stint in Hong Kong so much that I signed up for a second. I can’t seem to help it: large metropolises (metropoli?), with their packed thoroughfares, tall buildings, and bright lights, excite me.
But New York City is different, in a sense, because, in addition to all of the above, whenever I’m here I also get the distinct feeling that I am home. You can probably guess why: I was born and raised right across the border in Toronto, Canada, and, as much as I have travelled, I am North American through and through. New Yorkers speak my language, literally and (more importantly) figuratively: I’m loud, I tip servers as a reflex, and I smile and say hello to strangers without being solicited.
In short, I fit in here, and it feels good.
My fondness for the city has also been bolstered by the beauty I find without fail in its corners. Liebling and I are based in Midtown Manhattan and I have been discovering all its most prominent landmarks in quick succession. Peep my pics:

Huge NYC fan. I was lucky enough to go there earlier this year to spend time with a friend.

I love NYC! Been there four times now and never get sick of it. Just like you, I am a fellow Torontonian, and can totally relate to the “home” comment. I guess with NYC what you see is really what you get. Genuine attractions. Genuine people. That is what we search for in travel, don’t we?

How can you not love NYC ? There is so much to see. It is bustling. I am French, so NYC is very different from my culture but I feel very comfortable in the Big Apple. I have been there three times (twice when I lived in Toronto 😉 ) and I definitely want to go back one day.

I love your blog! My husband and I are getting on the train this evening from DC to spend Christmas in NYC! I’ve always wanted to do this. We spent Christmas in Paris 2 years ago and it was magical. I love the cold weather around this time, warm drinks, and amazing lights/Christmas displays:)

Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter
and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.”
