Not-so-Sleepless in Seattle (Part 2)

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Remember when I went to Seattle a few weeks back? I never finished recounting my adventures during my (all too brief) sojourn there.

While most of my time was spent catching up with family and running errands, I did have the opportunity to sneak in a bit of sightseeing.

I liked Seattle.

Seattle didn’t feel like a West coast city to me. Quite the contrary, actually. Seattle, for me, felt like a mix of Toronto (decidedly east coast) and San Francisco (probably one of the most “eastern-feeling” cities on the west coast).

I was shocked at how cosmopolitan the city was. I heard Chinese and Vietnamese spoken all around me, and marvelled at the large amount of bilingual (English- Spanish) signage. My aunt told me that there are lots of Mexicans living in the area.

Our first stop on our sightseeing tour was the Seattle waterfront, home to the a number of Seattle’s tourist attractions. We stopped at the famed Pike Place Market.

Unfortunately, we got there too late in the evening, and most of the marketplace was closed (including the Pike Place Fish Market, the one thing I really wanted to see). Darn! Despite this disappointing realization, I still took the opportunity to take some nifty pictures of the surrounding area.

And of course, ride Rachel, hallowed emblem of the Pike Place Market, and probably the most famous piggy bank statue in the world.

Next up was the a place that fellow blogger Crystal insisted I check out: the first ever Starbucks. I knew we were at the right place because of the throngs of people outside and in taking pictures. I nearly had to drop kick people to get the following shots.

After our experience at the very busy and crowded Starbucks, we walked down to the pier and took in the weakening daylight. Pretty!

I wanted to see the Space Needle, so after giving our overworked legs a rest, my aunt and I walked briskly along the upward-sloping streets and, after being teased by glimpses of the needle as we walked along, soon found ourselves at our destination. I would have liked to go up to the observation deck of the needle, but at $ 18 USD JUST to observe, this miserly, semi-jaded traveller wasn’t having it. Instead, I took these photos in front of the Space Needle just to show I was there. ($18 USD to go up in an elevator?! Really?!)

Who needs a view of the city when you can take an Asian-inspired peace sign photo in front of the monument?

My last day in town, I got up bright and early and went back to Pike Place Market in the hopes of seeing the famous fish market in action. But not before swinging by Starbucks headquarters and the baseball stadium where the Seattle Mariners play.

Luckily, Pike Place Market was in full swing when I found myself back there. I finally got to see the fish market. In all honestly, I was fairly disappointed. It was so tiny! And I also had expected them to be throwing fish around and singing all the time, but they only did it very occasionally. After waiting around for about 10 minutes with the crowd of about 40 people, all of us waiting expectantly for some sort of excitement, I departed and took pictures of the pretty flowers and fruits instead.

Satisfied that I had seen the highlights of what Seattle had to offer, I waited for my aunt and uncle to pick me up and they then deposited me back at the hotel where the friends I had hitched a ride with to Seattle were waiting. We started the long ride back to our unglamorous village tucked in the westernest part of Washington state, grateful to have gotten a taste of the big city, if only for a mere 36 hours.

  • I'm glad you got to go back to Pike's Place! It's such a fun market, even if the fish stall wasn't as good as you'd hoped.

  • Nice! I still haven't been to Seattle much less anywhere in Pacific Northwest. Looks like a nice time.

  • Oh you hit all the good spots. What they didn't let you catch a fish down at the Pike Place Market. When I worked in Downtown Seattle I would go there everyday for lunch, it's nice even the weather is not nice outside. You caught us a good moment this summer has been really iffy regarding the weather around here. No pics of Mt. Rainier, LOL you can see everywhere. This city isn't a beach town really, the beach over Alki is hardly what I'd call a beach and the water is super cold. Yes this city reminds me of San Francisco and Vancouver, two of my favorite cities. There are a lot of latino ppl here, they are usually from Central America Honduras, El Salvador, or Central Mexico. This is an international city, when I walk downtown I usually here about a million different languages from some unexpected faces LOL. I'm glad you had good time, next time you visit let me know. I know all the great non-tourist spots.

  • AHHH Starbucks!! Thanks so much for the photos 🙂 I'm surprised to hear there were tons of other people taking pics of it too…guess there are Sbux fans all over 😉

Beautiful pics…I feel like I've visited Seattle vicariously through you. Seems like a really cool city I hope to check out one day (and see this famous first Starbucks for myself!).

Love the photo of you riding that pig statue…I'm way too self conscious to ever do something like that but you look like you are having a blast!

See you soon copine (I hope!)

    @Melissa: Thanks!

  • You went to the first STarbucks, that's my mecca! I have to go there someday!

  • That's ok Oneika with the way you travel, I figure you'll come back through sometime and I'll still be here LOL.

  • @Mamacita: You will make it there soon, I'm sure! I wonder if Starbucks headquarters does tours a la Guiness head office in Dublin? That'd be cool, no?

  • Mamacita, I think Starbucks does have tours. The headquarters is not that far from Pike Place Market about 5 minute drive down in SODO (South of Downtown) District.

found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed.
There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!
