Toronto Eats

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

It’s no secret: I love to eat.

I love food. I can outeat most strapping men. I will sing and dance in anticipation of my favourite meals. True story.

It’s not surprising, then, that my tastebuds have been thoroughly enjoying this trip back home to Toronto. You see, I have been using reunions with friends and family as an opportunity to go out to breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Since I’ve gotten back to Toronto, I have been going out and indulging. Last week, I took advantage of Toronto’s Summerlicious festival, where Toronto’s best restaurants offer some of their best menus at 25% to 50% less than the sticker price. Me and a few friends decided to try out AME.

AME is a Japanese restaurant that features a vegan and gluten-free menu (though they also have some very delectable gluten-laden meat and dairy dishes).

And here’s where I let the pictures do the talking.

The food was pricey at $45 CDN (plus applicable taxes and gratuity) for three courses, but very filling. I had the mizuna salad to start, the salmon and bok choy dish as a main, and then the yummiest chocolate treats as a dessert. *slurp*

I thought that the decor was beautiful, too.

I have also been stocking up on Tim Hortons, my favouritest coffee shop ever. It helps that the coffee and snacks there are dirt cheap ($1.50 CDN for a coffee! $1 CDN for a donut!) and that there seems to be a Tim Hortons on every block these days. I met a friend there recently and couldn’t resist taking a few pics of the surroundings.

Last night I went out to eat at Spring Rolls, an Asian fusion restaurant that has locations all over the Greater Toronto Area. It seemed to be my lucky day: they were offering a $20 CDN prix fixe menu that had three courses. I had the chicken spring rolls to start, followed by the jumbo prawn in a black bean sauce, followed by a dessert of two mini-cupcakes that were oh so good but oh so bad for one’s health. I would have taken a picture of the food, but I was too busy wolfing it down to remember or care. I did, however, get the the server to snap this pic of me and my dining companion.

Life is grand!

  • The food from AME looks delicious, especially that dessert – it's on my list for when I visit Toronto

  • Are all these ladies your family or friends? You are all gorgeous!

  • Me too! I love food and when I know that I will be dining at a fave resto or my Mom's cooking one of my faves…oooooh, I'm in heaven.

In Paris, D and I have a favourite resto, one where we know we will eat well, have some good wine, and where the service is topnotch. Ditto for Toronto.

Anyway, I'm happy to read that you're having a grand time in the T-Dot. Hope we can meet up and grab something delish while we chat. Be good…and congrats on the visa etc. Cheerio then.

  • Oh yum!! I've been to Spring Rolls in TO before with Max actually! I remember it being very tasty!

And damn you for posting those Tim Hortons pics! Now I'm drooling and want a Boston Cream SO BAD. Oh well, just gotta wait another week 😉

  • Looks very good! I think I went to my first Tim Horton's when I was living in Michigan. I didn't know it was Canadian until years later. There are a few in NYC now in case you get a hankering for them while you are here.

  • Yum! Also I love that Toronto has some gluten free/vegan restaurants. That should be applauded!

  • Argh! I'm out of town for work in Kitchener (I know) so I am missing all the eats of summerlicious. Damn it! Funnily enough, I escaped home last week and had a great dinner at Spring Rolls also. Yum. So good.

  • Go, no RUN to Salad King. It is probably one of the best Thai restaurants in Toronto. Also check out Dutch Dreams. They make their own ice cream on site. It has crazy interior decorations so great for pictures 🙂

  • Wow the food looks amazing. Making my tummy rumble already

  • Spring Rolls, Tim Hortons….why do you taunt me like this? (Spring Rolls has the BEST wonton soup *drool*)

When can I expect the Randy's Patty post??? If you're gonna taunt me might as well go all the way!

  • …and naturally you also have to have a Cola Champagne with the patty (I can't do ginger beer with my patties lol).

  • @Elsa: Yes, please visit it! I just checked out your blog and your food photography is amazing!!! You would be able to do the food justice in your pics 🙂

@Hannah: All of them are friends but for the girl in the last pic who is my cousin! Thank you!!

@Tanya: I am looking for some Paris restaurant recommendations and looking very forward to hearing your impressions of Nice in person! You must be in the plane right now as I type, PLEASE contact me so we can meet up- you can pick the restaurant. 🙂

@Crystal: LOL @ Boston Cream! That's my least fav, but I'm a fan of the plainer donuts! Honey Crueller is my absolute fav, followed closely by Honey Dip (I know I am lame)… 🙂 I went to Tim Hortons last night again, actually and swore I would only pick up a tea but of course couldn't resist picking up timbits… Sigh…

@Terri: YAY!!!!! Didn't know that they were in NYC!

@Deidre: Toronto actually has a few very good ones! Two of my really good friends are vegan and another two have recently started a gluten free diet and it was upon their recommendation that we go to AME!

@Rhona: Being out of town and missing Summerlicious is probably good for your wallet! LOL I am spending wayyy too much money on eating out!

    @Nollywood Forever: LOL! I don't blame you!

@Kay: Girllllllllllll, you KNOW I already went to Randy's and bought my 6 pack of patties and cocoa bread…!!! Problem was that I ate off the WHOLE thing that I forgot to take pics… But I will be goign back there soon so there should be a post forthcoming!!

  • Goodness, all that food looks so scrumptious. I think it's healthy to have a healthy appetite and enjoy all the delicious food out there you only live once!

  • Yum! Santiago has come a long way in terms of the restaurant scene over the past few years, but we don't yet have any kind of restaurant week where a bunch of places offer discounts. I'm jealous of cities that do, and I hope Santiago eventually decides to do the same.
