Everybody goes to Cambodia to see the temples. Cambodia has a rich history that is reflected in the temple complexes located in Siem Reap, which are both varied and vast. Our group had the opportunity to tour the temples on bicycle, visiting the three most popular complexes of Angkor Wat, Bayon, and Ta Phrom.
Angkor Wat:
Angkor Wat was everything I thought it would be: majestic, imposing, and ancient. Our first stop on the “temple tour” we wandered its immense grounds for an hour and a half.
Bayon:
Bayon was by far the coolest temple complex. While the sprawling Angkor Wat usually gets the most attention and fame from guidebooks and enthusiastic backpackers, I was wowed by this set of sprawling temples that formed a veritable maze- me and two students actually got lost within the temples and couldn’t find the exit to the site! I was floored by the faces carved into the temples of varying sizes and managed to get some neat pictures. Most notably, I made a new friend- Me and Indem, an older Cambodian man who I came across, had a nice little conversation while a student of mine documented everything on film!
Ta Phrom:
Ta Phrom is the temple complex most reknowned for being the site where Angelina Jolie filmed “Tomb Raider”. We didn’t spend long at this particular complex, but in the short time we were there, it became clear that this was a very cool place. Very and green and leafy, with ivy scaling the sides of the temples, I nicknamed this one the “jungle temple”.
