Up next, Vietnam

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

Because of Chinese New Year festivities, most people in Hong Kong have a 4 day weekend, starting this Saturday. Because I am a teacher, I have 10 full days off (score!). Hence, yet another trip. Me and my German liebling leave for Vietnam at the crack of dawn on Saturday morning and are very much looking forward to 6 days of relaxation and discovery. After “rugged” trips to Nepal and East Africa (man, camping, hiking, stomach troubles, no running water, and scant electricity are no joke!) I decided that this trip was going to be one of (moderate) luxury. Thanks to the German liebling (who planned EVERYTHING, bless his heart), we should have a really great vacay. Initially, we had wanted to go to Bali for Chinese New Year, but exorbitant prices and lack of time (he only has 5 days off), meant that flying all the way to Indonesia for a ridiculous amount of money just wasn’t in the cards for us. Liebling started talking about Vietnam and how cool it is (he’s already been) and worked out all the schedules/itineraries/tickets/accommodation so how could I say no? And it is his birthday on the 12th and Valentine’s Day on the 14th (coincidentally the same day as the actual Chinese New Year’s day this year) and so pourquoi pas. Add to it that he is moving back to Europe indefinitely for work at the end of the month *sniff! sniff!* so it seemed like a nice thing to do to relax, relate, release, and spend some quality time together before he rides (flies) off into the sunset.

He booked tickets flying out from Macau on Macau’s low-cost air carrier Viva Macau (the Asian equivalent of RyanAir/JetBlue/EasyJet), though, in this popular time of travel (even busier than Christmas!!!), the tickets were unfortunately not that cheap (gulp)! So at the crack of dawn, we are taking a ferry from HK to Macau, then trucking it to the airport there. Then, the plan is to fly from Macau to Ho Chi Minh City (in the south of Vietnam) and take a hydrofoil directly to the closest beach, called Vung Tau. Apparently it is a haven for locals and tourists alike, which should be interesting. The beach is not the most beautiful in Vietnam (and certainly will not compare to the white sand beaches of Zanzibar) but I like the idea of being close to a major city (HCMC is only an hour hydrofoil ride away) and in a hotbed of activity!
