Firstly, my trip to Vietnam was hype. But I don’t necessarily think that what I saw of the country was hype. Big difference. Company and experiences are different from scenery (which at least in the part of Vietnam I saw, was unspectacular). Peep the pics below. We went to Vung Tau, and to Ho Chi Minh City. Vung Tau is a beach getaway for Vietnamese from HCMC, and they were celebrating the Lunar New Year, so you know it was packed! HCMC is like most of the other major Southeast Asian cities I’ve seen thus far.
Secondly, a moment of silence for the dearly departed. Liebling is gone! But not gone forever. He’s supposed to be coming back to visit me in Hong Kong in May. So no tales of angst from us star cross’d lovers just yet. 🙂
Thirdly, man, I never been a fan of resorts (nor of resort food) until this trip. The place we stayed at was AMAZING. And I gained about 5 pounds in as many days from the food there.
Fourthly (is that a word?), I have never seen as many people riding on a scooter (in many cases, up to 4 people on one dang scooter!) and as many children on said scooters NOT wearing helmets. And check out the pic with the tangle of electrical wires in the street… *shake my head*
Fifthly (yeah, I said fifthly), as my friend just told me in a conversation this morning, me and Liebling travel in style. After hostelling in Europe this past summer, and very spartan accomodation in Nepal and Kenya and Tanzania most recently, you damn skippy that we spared no expense and did 5-star accomodation all the way this time.
Cuz sometimes, you just gotta be a rockstar.

Vietnam was on the "maybe next up" list. Now, maybe it moves down a notch or two or so? 🙂 Thanks for the pics.

From what I hear, the north of Vietnam is where it's at. Hanoi and the surrounding area (Sapa, Halong Bay) are apparently stunning and have many traces of their French colonial past. Southern Vietnam (where I went) is devoid of any colonial architecture. I felt as though I could have been in any major Southeast Asian city… That being said, apparently the south has tons of beautiful beaches. But next time I will definitely do the north. So if you're planning a trip to Vietnam, you may want to focus more on the northern part!
Although the place was iffy, your resort looked nice. At least you got to get away for a bit with yor man before he left.
i've now been over most of vietnam, and i think the northern and central parts are more atmospheric than the south (unless you're interested in war history, which i kind of was).
in addition to sapa and halong bay and all that, i really thought parts of hué were beautiful–the citadel area w/ all the tree-lined streets…cycling through was pretty amazing for me.
hoi an's also pretty, if not super touristy.
oneika, go check out laos! i loved luang prabang. the ppl there are amazingly friendly and chatty, and usually not b/c they want to sell you something.
btw, i may be in HK next year from jan-mar…i'll keep you updated.
