Perched splendidly on the shores of the Limmat River, the Storchen is an ideal retreat for visitors looking to experience Zurich’s best hotel.
Consistently rated #1 on TripAdvisor, the Storchen is adored by its reviewers — no small feat when it comes to Zurich, a world class city rife with four and five-star accommodation. Lauded by customers for its luxurious rooms, fantastic location, and spectacular service, I was tickled at the prospect of spending two nights here, anxious to see if the hyperbolic statements on the TripAdvisor reviews were indeed true.
Feeling somewhat wrinkled after taking an overnight train from Ljubljana, Slovenia, I was thrilled to discover that the reviewers weren’t lying when they attested to the Storchen’s great location. An easy walk from Zurich Hauptbanhof, the city’s centrally situated train station, I was literally at the hotel within 15 minutes of descending from my train carriage. The hotel is just a stone’s throw from the Banhofstrasse, the long arterial avenue that stretches from the train station and through Zurich’s historical district.
Linguists will love the Storchen: upon my arrival I was greeted in French, German, and English. With my Deutsch being relatively schlecht, and English just feeling plain boring, I took the opportunity to address the people at reception in French. I was pleased to see that they were capably conversant in the language of Molière, despite Zurich being a predominantly German speaking city.
But more about the room and the hotel itself. I’ve stated many a time that while I prefer boutique hotels, I often opt for newer boutique accommodation: while I appreciate the history and grandeur of older establishments, I often find their decor dated and worn. The Storchen is over 650 years old (!) and while I was not naive enough to think that the hotel wouldn’t have been updated since the 14th century, I definitely was not expecting the brand new fixtures, entirely renovated washrooms, and flatscreen televisions adorning the guest rooms. My room, though a bit small and lacking a view of the Limmat River like some of the others, was completely refurbished. The decoration was elegant and the slick washroom was tastefully modern and stocked with thick towels and various toiletries.
The lovely management whisked me around the hotel for a tour. Our first stop was up to the rooftop where the clear day yielded killer views:
Then down to the hotel’s Rotisserie restaurant, which boasts a terrace and exclusive view of the Limmat and the Grossmunster church. This lovely terrace, open in the summer, is also where breakfast is served; I had a hearty meal here the following morning.
The hotel has no shortage of picturesque places to eat should the costly rooms dissuade you spending spending the night (alas, 5-star comfort in expensive Zurich doesn’t come cheap!). Apart from the above mentioned Rotisserie restaurant (the view from the terrace alone means it is worth a try), the Storchen has three other establishments on site where one can steal a drink or bite to eat. I had a quick ice cream with one of the hotel’s representatives at the Boulevard Cafe, the ground level, open air terrace on the boulevard in front of the hotel.
The verdict? This classy hotel is great for an indulgent weekend trip to Zurich: spotless, grandiose, and conveniently central. A room is expensive here but Zurich is a very expensive city in general; go as a couple and split the room bill!

We’re hoping to have a layover in Zurich on our way to Tanzania this December. This hotel looks great, but not sure if it’s in our price range. I also love boutique hotels, but maybe one day I’ll have the pleasure of being able to stay at the Storchen.
The price definitely makes this a “special occasions” hotel. I would come here primarily for a weekend stay with a loved one to celebrate a milestone! I loved Tanzania, how lovely you’re going!
