I’m having the most fantastic time. We arrived in Sorrento on Saturday afternoon, after taking the slow train from Rome to Naples, then taking another slow train called the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Sorrento. Our short stay in Naples was relatively uneventful but eye-opening. We had to transfer from the main train terminal to the Circumvesuviana train station on foot and we got an eyeful of the surrounding area- which was run-down, seedy, and had all kinds of unsavoury folk hanging about. As Naples already has a bad reputation for theft, seedy-ness, and unsavoury-ness, I kept a death grip on my purse and rolled my two trolley suitcases along the broken sidewalks with a sense of purpose and speed that even Usain Bolt would envy.
On the train ride from Naples to Sorrento we had a severely drunk/shady Italian guy sit down beside us and he regaled us with slurred Italian and sweeping hand gestures for about 45 minutes of the ride. I was terrified that he would try to rob us, but my suspicions were unfounded as he even had difficulty keeping himself upright!!! He explained to us in slurred Italian that he was “tired” from working the night shift but I think he was probably wasted and high on something… The people you meet while travelling…
His departure at his train stop and our arrival in Sorrento were much appreciated. Our hotel is fabulous and has a balcony which gives a sea-view and great views of the surrounding areas. Sorrento is really cute and beautiful and we have been enjoying the food and non-stop sun and hot weather. While it is SUPER touristy, we were happy to see the prices were not astronomical, with our typical restaurant meal clocking in to about 30 Euros for two people. Not bad, considering eating out in Rome can be ridiculously expensive- even a stupid can of Coke in Rome is 4 Euros!
I thought Sorrento was insanely gorgeous until we did a day trip to the island of Capri yesterday… Jaw-dropping views… Only pictures can really describe what the island has to offer but even then they lack the accuracy and clarity that only seeing things like this with you own eyes provide. I have been enjoying my new camera very much as I ve been able to take some fantastic pics! Now, Capri was super touristy, and the prices reflected this fact, but we still managed to scrape out a decent lunch for our typical 30 Euros for 2 people budget.
We saw the Blue Grotto, which, while ridiculously priced is worth it.
Today we are relaxing in Sorrento and then in the next days we are doing day trips to Positano (hopefully on a rented scooter) and Pompeii (hopefully not on a rented scooter), before taking the long train ride back to Rome on Friday and flying to Croatia on Saturday.

Honestly, your trip sounds amazing. I am beyond jealous. I have heard wonderful things about Capri so I hope you share the pics soon.

Hey Nikita! I'm not sure if I've left a comment on your blog or not, but I have been reading it for at least the past year. I just wanted to say thank you so much for writing and keeping up with it. It's so great to see your adventures and trace your journey throughout the world. For me personally, it's been really cool to read about someone who seems very similar… at least in the sense of wanderlust. I was just going through your entries around the time when you were deciding to go to Hong Kong and they really resonated with me. I, too, struggled between deciding whether or not I wanted to stay in the US, settle down, and "face responsibility," or to follow my heart and explore. I feel like the words you've written could have been written by me, but it's cool because you've been there, done that, and are still doing it, you know? Anyway, I am getting ready to start my time as an English Assistant in France and I'm very excited. Being abroad is something that I feel like is just right and when I'm not out there, exploring, I'm wishing I could. So, just, thank you for sharing your journey and providing some inspiration. 🙂

@Erika- thanks so much for reading!! Going abroad when all over your friends and family seem to be "settling down" stateside is SUCH a challenge! Because of course you wonder if you are doing the wrong thing, and wonder why you are so keen on leaving! But exploring can be so rewarding and fruitful, and my mantra is always to try everything of a travel nature, because I would much regret going having gone somewhere than not having gone anywhere at all! So jealous that you re going to be an English assistant in France! I remember that time fondly! Where will you be teaching?
@LoveSounds- Thanks!!! Basically I make travel a priority- and am always thinking ahead to my next trip and how to go about making it work financially. I am fairly careful with my money and have never been into the new fangled technologies like blackberries and stuff like that so I can keep all that money for a plane ticket! I also try to plan all my trips as far ahead as possible so that I can get the best prices and rates!

I will be living in Nancy, France (near Strasbourg). I'm very excited about the location, as I am really interested in the German culture and bettering my German. Plus, it's 1h30 minutes to Paris by train, so that's awesome for travel and just seeing Paris, too. I'M STOKED!
