After a stay at the Antiq Palace Hotel in Ljubljana, I’m convinced more than ever that I was made for “The Suite Life”.
I spent a night here during my three day trip to Slovenia. The gargantuan room they put me in was not a room at all, but a palatial full-service apartment fit for a princess. My large suite had a bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen, AND dining area.
When I saw it, I cried out in amazement… and my voice subsequently echoed through the immense space. I was impressed.
You see, in my experience, European hotel rooms are insanely petite. When I travelled around France, I was appalled by the tiny closets they dared call rooms. This gigantic room, then, appealed to my North American sensibilities. I am used to space; in much of Canada and the States everything is bigger and wider.
The Antiq Palace Hotel is stylish boutique accommodation located on a quiet side street in Ljubljana’s historic centre. I had a bit of a difficult time finding it as the street it’s on is numbered a tad wonkily and the building itself labelled only discreetly. But it would seem that this slightly secretive location only adds to the calm elegance of the property. Once a residence for the city’s nobility, the immaculately kept building and grounds have a distinctly regal air. The 13 individually designed suites have their own flavour and the layout of floors is interesting, if a bit confusing- on two occasions I got lost trying to find my room!
That said, I loved the layout of the building: there were loads of back doors and half-staircases, split-level landings and outdoor patios so that walking around the hotel was an adventure in itself. The lovely inner courtyard where I ate in the morning was serenity defined- it was quiet and peaceful, perfect for a contemplative solo meal or a romantic breakfast between lovers. As for the breakfast itself, the food was fresh and well-presented (the croissants were divine), but I was disappointed that what I consider a staple for a hotel breakfast was not there: there were no eggs! Blasphemy!
The property also had a small gym that I briefly thought about using, but laziness put the kibosh on any plans I had for maintaining any level of fitness. (Hey, I was on holiday, don’t judge me!) The gym, however, was decently stocked and the equipment looked brand new. The Antiq Palace also has a spa, but unfortunately I did not indulge on this occasion.
My verdict? The Antiq Palace Hotel is well-located 4-star luxury at its finest (and cheapest- Ljubljana is still great value compared to other cities in Europe)! The only real drawback to this place is that it only has 13 rooms and they fill up fast!
