Taste of India: Gunpowder restaurant in Delhi

BY ONEIKA RAYMOND

India provides a smorgasbord of flavours for even the most picky palate.  Check out what I ate my first day in Delhi.

I’m rarely adventurous with food (well, except for that time I ate whale in Norway).

I have gotten food poisoning far too many times while travelling (click here for my tale about falling horribly ill while travelling alone in Guatemala for an example), so I usually play it safe.

But being in Delhi merited a little experimentation, at least on the first day. After my  uncomfortable overnight flight from London, I met up with the friend who is hosting me in Delhi.  After an innocuous lunch with her at her workplace (chicken pita and a Coke), I requested we do something a bit more exotic for dinner.

Hours later, we found ourselves at Gunpowder, a relatively simple establishment located in the endearingly scruffy Hauz Khas village, a historic jumble of streets in the southern part of New Delhi.

Gunpowder is a bit difficult to find, even if you’ve had the good fortune to have eaten there in the past. We trundled through the maze-y pathways, only narrowly avoiding the motos that careened past us. We side-stepped the stray dogs that resignedly troll the streets and squinted into the dark hoping for signs of the restaurant. The signage for Gunpowder is small and a tad misleading; we advanced too far and had to double-back through a litter-strewn back lot and up four flights of stairs before arriving at our final destination.

Gunpowder specializes in southern Indian cuisine.  This was a novelty for me as most of the Indian restaurants I frequent in London exclusively serve northern Indian fare. I realize as I type this that I have also eaten Pakistani food in London [I’ve written about my absolute favourite, Lahore Kebab House, see the post here].

What is south Indian cuisine then? Hailing from the southern states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, southern cuisine is largely vegetarian and comprises a variety of tasty seafood dishes.  Southern cuisine is also probably the spiciest of  all Indian dishes. My friend and I aren’t fans of very spicy food so we skipped the chillies and opted for a soupy prawn dish and pumpkin chutney.

This was accompanied by a steaming pot of white rice and a doughy flatbread known as parotta. Served warm, parotta is the flakier, gummier cousin to naan bread.

Before my trip to India I feared getting sick from the food (everyone told me to expect to get food poisoned) and thus was reticent about being so adventurous in my food choices, especially on the first night. However, Gunpowder’s dining area is very clean. The neat presentation of dishes and fresh taste of the food assuaged any fears I had fears I had about food poisoning.

Dinner for two people came out to less than $23 USD, which is quite favourable for the food quality and location.  This was a great introduction to southern Indian cuisine and a must-try if you find yourself in Delhi and looking to fill a hunger gap.

Are you a fan of Indian food?  What is your favourite Indian dish?

  • Looks delicious!!! I have not had that kind of bread here in the USA and have eaten at a South Indian restaurant.

  • I love Indian food. It was one of my favourite parts about travelling in India. I think I got parasites eating street food and then we also ate one strange little restuarant that did not make me feel clean and safe. The other risk was that they kept pushing fruit on me.

  • Love south Indian food. Used to have a colleague from Goa in the UK who always bought in homemade dosas and all other kinds of goodies! That place looks cool. Will try and find it when I am in Delhi at the weekend.

  • Everything looks so yummy, especially the parotta. I guess what’s in the US (and Malaysia) is primarily Northern Indian food as well. I could eat naan & dahl every day!

    Stay (stomach) safe!

  • God I’m jealous. I’m living in a pretty monotone city right now and while they have all sorts of fancy restaurants without the exorbitant prices there’s a real dearth of Indian cuisine. You can’t just walk down the street for doner or samosa at one in the morning?

  • I absolutely love indian cuisine, and Im a fan of spicy food 🙂 The best part of travelling is getting to try the local food, I think it makes the whole experience more memorable. Glad to see you were adventurous 🙂

  • I noticed a curious. You’re Canadian but for comparison purposes you used USD instead of CAD, why is that?

  • How is it that just anybody can create a weblog and get as popular as this? Its not like youve said something incredibly impressive more like youve painted a quite picture around an issue that you know nothing about! I dont want to sound mean, right here. But do you actually think that you can get away with adding some fairly pictures and not seriously say something?

  • Of course, the biggest change is the outsole, which is directly replaced with the latest VaporMax 2020 full palm air cushion midsole. The feeling of surging soft elastic feet can be imagined.

  • Take the red Bacchus bag mentioned at the beginning as an example. This bag is priced at 16,000 yuan on the official website. The recycling price is generally around 40% to 70% off the original price. The discount for the new Bacchus bag recycling generally depends on the brand awareness of the bag, the popularity of the style, the degree of external wear, and whether the accessories are complete. How to match Gucci’s most classic luxury bags? The same color echoes more advanced, and the contrast color has unique personality! If you want to discuss what fashion items are most worth investing in, then luxury bags are the first choice. I always tell everyone that classic luxury bags are the most worthwhile investment, and it turns out that they can indeed live up to this expectation. ▼
